There are people who are just perfect at organization. Their homes are spotless, with every little thing in place and you rather feel ashamed of yourself for being such a slob. Granted, we cannot all be that way. Some of us are sloppier, and you know there is always someone worse than you! If that does not make you feel better, then you probably do need to find ways to become better at organization.

Organizing stuff feels like such an uphill task if you are used to just throwing things down and forgetting about them. If you are the type that only tidies up when guests are coming over, you have a lot of work ahead of you. Bad habits are hard to break, but as they say, it is all in the mind. You can take a few steps towards achieving ultimate organization.

1. Get rid of clutter

Clutter is easy to accumulate. There are things you buy because they look cute and are on sale, and you never use them. The annoying thing is that you also do not have the heart to throw them away, so they pile up, creating clutter. The best thing to reduce clutter is not to accumulate it in the first place.

Do not buy anything you do not need on an impulse. Anything you have not used in a while, and you have no intention of using, throw it in the bin or donate to charity. Make sure everything in your house has a permanent place. Get a toy bin for the kids’ toys, have a specific place where you store magazines and newspapers, etc.

Sometimes it is not always about unwanted things creating clutter, it about not returning them to where they belong because there is no specific place for them. Weed out your clothes. Get rid of clothes that no longer fit, or are uncomfortable.

2. Clean an area at a time

Organising a disorganized home is not a task for a single day. It will take time and lots of work to whip it into the shape you want. You need to organize the home an area at a time. Most of the mess in your house took years to achieve. The best way to organize is by doing one room at a time. When you are done with one, move to the next. Start with the kitchen, for example, clean out all drawers, and throw away all the unused plastics, mugs and plates.

3. Find ingenious ways to store stuff

You cannot throw away everything in the name of organization. You have to find clever ways of storing things, especially if you have a small home. Walk through the house with a pen and paper, noting all the nooks and crannies you can use as storage spaces. The attic, basement, garage, etc. are excellent storage spaces.

Buy clear bins and label them for easier identification. Fold away all extra blankets. Get a chest that doubles up as a seat and place it at the foot of your bed or the kids’ beds. Decide what goes where, starting with the out of season stuff that will not be in use for a while, such as Christmas decorations and winter attire.

4. Get Help

The cleaners will not know what you want to keep and what you want to throw away. You have to be present for the exercise. You can make sure you are available every day the cleaner comes in so that you work a room per visit.

It is easier and makes more sense to organize the home a room at a time. Every time the cleaner comes in, the two of you can work the room thoroughly, throwing out junk and organizing what remains in a more functional manner.

5. Organize your papers

Have a functional filing system. Make sure you have an action file for all pending items, like bills. Keep a basic file that has receipts like rent, insurance records, etc. File away in a cabinet. Classic files are those archived for references like medical records, or homeowner records. These go into storage facilities like safe deposit boxes.

6. Household notebook

Have a household notebook that allows the household access to any information. Have all the important information listed there, like doctor’s numbers on the emergency page. Place the notebook in an accessible point, maybe next to the phone where a guest, or the babysitter can access it.

7. Organize your kitchen

Organizing the kitchen is a daunting task. The kitchen is a mess hotspot. Everyone is in and out of the kitchen; the fridge does not rest, especially during summer when the kids are home.Make a menu for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks in between.

Having a menu makes it easy for everyone to know what to eat and when. This also saves you from the kids having upset tummies from too much sugar.

8. Bathroom mess

The bathroom can get messy if you are not careful. Miscellaneous items everywhere, soaps, that shower gel you bought and hated, etc. There just never seems to be enough space for everything.

Have two sides, one for you and your partner, or children. Organize according to what you use most often. Throw away what you do not use; any bits of leftover soap, any empty shower gel containers, or travel items you won’t use. Leave only the bare minimum; otherwise, the bathroom will be a hot mess.

9. Move into a smaller house

So the children are all grown up and have moved away. You are stuck with a huge home that rings of emptiness, and a lot of clutter! Do yourself a favor and move into a smaller home. You have accumulated years of belongings, and it is time to change that.

Go through all your stuff, throwing everything you have accumulated over the years. If you need to keep it, rent some storage space.

10. Have a cleaning checklist

Make sure you have a cleaning checklist for every season. A fall checklist prepares you for winter. All toys, patio furniture etc. has to be stored away for winter. Touch up paint; check all windows and doors to see if they shut tightly. This prevents loss of heat during winter, which means spending more on heating.

11. Outsource

The best way to stay organized and to reduce clutter in your home is to outsource things you do not need on a daily basis. Instead of piling up books and magazines that you will not need later, why not borrow them from your public library? Rent tools for home repair, or paint sprayers instead of buying.

12. Organize your laundry

A well-organized home feels awesome. One of the things that might make you want to pull out your hair is laundry chaos. Make sure you have a laundry schedule to avoid people running out of clean clothes.

Children change many times in a day. Do laundry regularly. Make sure you have laundry baskets in every room, and everyone puts their dirty clothes in there. Have adequate laundry detergent, stain removers and fabric softeners in the laundry room to avoid wasting time moving up and down.

13. Back to school

The back to school season can drive you crazy if you are not organized. Make sure you have everything before school opens. School bags, check the school shoes fit, all relevant documents like school menus and calendars, etc.

For the new school year, make sure you have all relevant contacts like new teachers, new bus drivers, etc. Being organized will save you a lot of grief over the year.
