I have been thinking about this some more.The book is full of hints about the house and the role of husbands and wives. okey, in the first way, about the color of the backgrownd, I have thought that black and white should be the propper color, for the 1950's like the photos and television were in that times; the black and white reveals the other elements that are colored.
In the second way, I will try the pastel retro wallpaper, and some of the other elements required!

Thank you :-) This is different to what i expected but very nice! I was thinking of pastel retro 'wallpaper' style backgrounds. Could you perhaps add a colour to these backgrounds?
