Wind Guard

I propose the Wind Guard system based on the requirements provided. Please note this is only a design concept study and not a detailed engineering study. Please contact me if further information is required (technical drawings, design details). I hope that you find my solution innovative and practical. Let me know if you require further information.

      No, the sheet will be standard sized. The cutting will be different. The suction cups will be positioned a certain distance away from the edge (minimum 2*Dia). But to answer you question you will incur some costs on the CMM operation. I can propose alternative flexible materials but the level of protection will be sub par. Also if you want both protection and fold-able materials, the cost will go up. Ultimately, it is a trade-off based on your specific application. (Eg:. I was considering, an aluminum cage that is fold-able but the aesthetics will suffer and so will the cost.)

      I think flexible materials would probably be more suitable in terms of user-friendliness and storage. It will also be easier to put them in stores since they won't occupy a lot of store space.

    1) Since every car's windshield is of a different size, a CAD/ CAM operation is needed to cut the standard sized screen to the exact shape of the car windshield. This is a relatively simple operation. 2) Again this is a concept study. Details such as how many suction cups are required, is determined at the detail design stage. I have an idea on how to provide addition fixity with the car body using magnets (at negligible cost). 3) The screen material is selected based on your costs and protection level. Acrylic is used for aircraft canopies and can withstand very high impact loads. I gave the choice of plastic because it will be cheaper but won't offer the level of protection as acrylic. 4) The screen can be installed on the car windshield and left there. Since the plastic/ acrylic material is transparent there will be no significant view distortion. Again I only provided a concept study. For detailed design and analysis please contact me.

      Since I don't have all the details regarding your exact project and what are you trying to achieve, let me put the following information: The user can choose to put the wind guard at home and only install when there is a weather warning. A windshield replacement costs anywhere between 500 dollars minimum. So if there is a chance of heavy hailstorm that can potentially break through my windshield, I will drive with that.

      But then I will need to store a huge piece of plastic in their houses/apartments. I think you need to give this concept another thought.

    Area of a toyota corolla's windshield = 14.82 ft2. Cd=1.4 which in reality will be higher, closer to 2. Wind speed for Zone C = around 100-110 mph. I made a statement that even if the wind will be blowing at a quarter of the area the load will be around 100-150 lbs. You can argue that 4 50 lbs suction cups can withstand that wind, but

    1) 50 lbs is in test conditions. The actual value will be lower, especially if installed not perfectly (for example on a dry window)
    2) When the wind will be blowing from a side the load will be concentrated on 2 suction cups, not 4.
    3) 50 lbs suction cups are more than 3 inch in diameter. That's a huge suction cup!

      Wind can blow from a side. On example of Toyota Corolla some simple wind calculations result in approximate 450-650 lbs load (depending on the wind speed and drag coefficient) if the wind blows on the whole area of the screen. Even if it blows on a quarter of that area its still 100-150 lbs. Even if we use the 50 lbs suction cups that you are proposing (which are huge by the way!) the safety factor is close to 1 (not even taking into account that the load will be mainly immersed on 2 suction cups when wind will be blowing from a side). This is not reliable from engineering stand point. I know you have some skills, you can do better! Put some more thought into this!

      The loads you have put here, are they quite high. What area are using for your area and Cd. If you have wind loads from the side, the frontal cross-sectional area will be minimum. I agreed that you will see large wind loads if you consider the whole area, but remember the wind pressure is pushing the wind guard onto the wind shield even more, which makes the situation better.

      How do you offer to store a large sheet of plastic? It can't be put to trunks.

      The screen can be installed on the car windshield and left there. Since the plastic/ acrylic material is transparent there will be no significant view distortion. In case that you want to carry the windshield in the car there are two options:1) If the trunk is big you can store it. 2) You can attach the wind guard to the roof/ bonnet where ever it won't interfere with regular driving. Finally, store the wind guard in your garage. When the weather forecast calls a hailstorm, the drivers installs it when required. No special tools are needed.

    Your concept is ok but needs to be further developed. Particularly, the fixture mechanism needs to be sturdy and withstand wind loads. The suction cups most likely won't be able to resist the wind. Also, the best screen material needs to be selected. In addition, you need to consider that the windshield sizes are different with every car. Another problem is how to store the screen.
