Contest Brief

I have written a thesis for a master's degree in biology. I turn it in in one week (august 31).
I need an image for the cover, and I would love a creative and eye-catching graphic illustration that is also representative of the topic (I lack the skills to create such an illustration).
In short: the topic is about termite colonies that live in complex, bustling cities inside mounds of earth. The termites eat wood that is nutritionally imbalanced. Eating the imbalanced diet is made possible by associations between the insects and their intestinal bacteria.

My ideas:
"Imbalance" is a main theme, so something that involves uneven scales would be great. termites and their food (wood, leaf litter) could represent the two sides
or
Something that represents termites and the bacteria inside their gut. Maybe a line of foraging termites and a magnifying glass over one showing a gut shape filled with microbes.
or
combination of those two
or
something else entirely. If you would like further inspiration, I will add an existing article on the topic (note: please do not use any of the author's numerical values or text in the illustration) and search of insect reference images should be restricted "fungus-growing termites" or "macrotermitinae". Bacteria illustration can be stereotypical.

It should fill a rectangular space roughly 10 cm by 15 cm on a vertical, standard sized sheet. Exact size, shape, fill, color/BW doesn't matter to me. I would just like it to be attractive, professional and biological! The artist will receive due credit in the text.

Thank you for your interest!

Do you want that cover to be originally designed from scratch or designed by altering real or existing images..?

I would be open to either (although I imagine my budget is quite low for an original design... I'm considering increasing it). Sorry, it's my first time using the site and I am quite clueless about design in general so I probably used conflicting language in the description.
