I need original illustration ideas for my newest children's book, "Time for Cody Bunny".
I'm looking for a SIMPLE, sketch-like drawing, done either in crayon or oil pastels (or a computerized version that gives the crayon effect), to illustrate the following text:

"Once again Cody snuggled under his blanket and listened as the porch swing returned to its back and forth song. “Mama’s sleeve still smells of pancakes from breakfast,” Cody thought to himself. He took a long, deep sniff to enjoy the sweetness of it. Then he lay his head on the soft sleeve of her robe as the swing began to slowly rock him to sleep..."

I'd like to see this scene briefly illustrated. Cody is a little bunny (he wears human clothes, as does his Mama.) They are sitting on the porch swing, and Cody is snuggling. It's fine to zero in on Cody's upper body area and Mama's torso... It is not necessary to create the entire swing or deep details. Focus on Cody's facial expression. Please give him a unique personality. Key thoughts: kind, sweet, gentle, colorful (primary colors, for the most part, but SOFT...)

The winning entry will be the one that captures Cody's mood and creates a cozy feel. I need Cody to have personality. The winner will be the image that I feel best fits my publication and may possibly result in future illustrations.

The book is 8.5" x 11". Illustrations should fill nearly 75% of that space. Please scan and forward to me. Thanks!

I used Photoshop to fix the image for now and that is what is shown on #45 . I just want to make sure it is making sense. By the way, my English isn't really good so I am sorry if there's any misunderstanding!

And another question :) You would like illustration in crayon technique...Do you mean pastel crayon (picture from internet in pastel crayon: http://static.dimespring.com/field/image/Oil-Pastel-Crayons_43.jpg) or pencil crayon (picture from internet in pencil crayon: http://www.sylviart.com/Dogs/images/white_dog_th.jpg ) or do you like both :) ? I am sorry, but I was not born in English speaking country and I am not sure what type of crayon do you mean :) Thank you very much, MR.

  I like the first one ( http://static.dimespring.com/field/image/Oil-Pastel-Crayons_43.jpg ) a bit more than the other, I think. Actually, the textured paper is probably what gives it the "crayon" look... right? I'm sure pastel chalks would do as well... It's the texture that I am looking for more than anything. Please don't feel a need to rush. I will wait for your entry :)

I have done little changes in the bunny (without the ear change)... please check if this color and dress type (will include more warmer colors) is what you are looking for.. if yes then will make a fair copy of the bunny and mom with apron..thanks

ysfworks, I LOVE this pose!!! YES, this is the scene I have in mind... One suggestion I have is that Mama's eyes have a softer look... right now she seems like she is up to mischief... LOL. (not criticizing, mind you... just focusing on details now...) Did you do this by hand? Do you have pastels or crayons that will give it some texture? Thanks!

flashmakeit, Thank you for your illustration :) I love the porch swing. Cody's pose is endearing, as I desired. I like the way he is looking up at Mama and she is smiling down on him. One suggestion I would have is to give Mama a more rabbit-like look... Maybe the ears could stand up half-way then lop over... you know? As far as clothing goes, I guess I'm looking for more of a classic look: Mama in a ruffled apron, etc.. But all ideas are welcome! I haven't made up my mind about ANY of it yet :)

Flaviagiroflai, Thanks for your illustration :) I like the simplicity of the scenery. If I were to make a suggestion, it would be to make both bunnies shorter and a bit plump... Also, can you get that fur-like texture from your drawing tool rather than using dots? I'm looking for a texture that looks like a crayon streak... Thank you for your submission!

  Hi. I love the facial expression you have captured for Cody. You have focused on the pose and area of the drawing that I had in mind. What would I suggest? Hmmm.... maybe an ear that stands up a bit more...(not so flat)... brown or cream-colored fur... Can you think of a way to give Cody a more boy-like look? Just thinking out-loud... Thanks!

Heads up, all: Do you remember (or have you seen) the hand-crafted fabric, stuffed bunnies that everyone was decorating their homes with in the U.S. in the 90's? (I will try to find a photo and upload it...???) They were sweet, soft, and ... somewhat "frilly"... The Mamas wore a pinafore-like apron .. The boys wore bib-overalls...that sort of thing. I guess that's the image I have in my head right now, but it is NOT the final answer! I love seeing all the new ideas, and Cody's character is NOT completed, by any means. So, create, create, create ! Best wishes, all!

m097431, Thanks for your question. Please feel free to use whatever media you wish! I'm here to learn and discover the right look... I suggested crayon or oil pastel because I love the soft-edged, juvenile look they give when rubbed sideways across a textured surface...you know what I mean? But I am completely open to any and all ideas!
