Ideas competition for creation a memorial stone in Sweden.

Now It is extremely important to recall and immortalize the events which took place 70 years ago upon the victory over fascism.
A Russian-Swedish organization known as “Sputnik” invites all enthusiasts to become a part of history and take part in an ideas competition for establishing a cultural and historical site of commemoration about the unique events that took place in Luleå, in 1945.

25 000 war prisoners from the Soviet Union were transferred from concentration camps located in Norway into Karlsvik, which is a very small place situated in the Northern part of Sweden, within Luleå city area. After that, they were transferred to the Soviet Union by means of boats.

The event took place in June of 1945, where citizens of Luleå fully supported released prisoners with food, medications and clothes.
Volunteers from the Red Cross fed the arriving former prisoners with food and provided appropriate medical treatment.
The project known as «Karlsvik-The Place of Commemoration» is currently supported by the City Council of the city of Luleå.
The Place of commemoration is situated in the forest. In turn, the forest is located in the place where the school serving as an accommodation site for ex-prisoned women and children was built.

The memorial’s height shall be up to 2m in total.

The memorial should be made of natural stone. It is possible to use partial plates made of metal for designing bas-relief or a text.
Age of applicants: from 18 years and older.
You can make a sketch on paper or present your own idea from your computer.
Formal opening of the memorial site should be arranged on the Victory Day, 9 of May, 2015 and this event should be devoted to the70th anniversary of the end of the World War II.
It should not only become a symbol for the solidarity of humankind, but must also herald the very important cultural and historical place for the tourist routes going all over the Northern part of Sweden.
Selection criteria of the ideas:
Symbolic: Memorable stone should symbolize the peace, event and solidarity.
Memorial should reflect the core of the event that took a place in 1945,inKarlsvik involving the prisoners from the Soviet Union. It should reflect the release from imprisonment and give people a sense of celebration and freedom as well as demonstrate the helpful attitude of the local residents.
Style and harmony with surrounding areas.
Uniqueness.
Ease of execution.
Suggestions should be sent to Sputnik via email up to July 25, 2014 and they will be placed on our website.
The author of the best idea will be awarded anhonorable 2-years membership in the organization “Sputnik” and a special gift.
We understand that people are now taking summer break, however the symbolic idea and overall concept of the memorial place should be approved during this autumn ,and that is why all the necessary documents should be prepared by the end of this summer.
