We’re looking to get a product label designed that will be featured on a line of candles for our brand, Peculiar Pumpkin. This brand is a spooky candle company that sells dark, macabre, Tim Burton and/or Halloween-inspired candles.

We have a logo already (provided) which is a pumpkin with a carved face. The design should be in line with this logo so it feels congruent. The design should be illustrated/created, as in NOT using existing pictures or photography.

SIZE/DIMENSIONS:

We’re going to be selling multiple products and candles in various sizes, including a 9oz candle in a straight-sided jar. The main label sizes will be 2" (tall) x 3" (wide) and 1" (tall) x 2.5" (wide). We’ll use these for the main labels.

All designs should be a high resolution file in the event we want to scale this to a larger size as well. Examples of this include products from Magic Candle Co (here – https://magiccandlecompany.com/collections/frontpage/products/banshee-flight) or Live Bearded (here – https://livebearded.com/products/complete-beard-kit). The styles are similar, and there’s a continuity between the labels even with all the varying sizes.

ELEMENTS TO INCLUDE ON THE LABEL:

– Pumpkin Logo
– Peculiar Pumpkin (ie. brand name)
– Candle Product Name (should be MOST prominent thing)
– Scent Notes (allow for 2-3 notes)
– Purveyors of the Curious & Eclectic (tagline)
– Weight: 8oz Soy Candle
– Trim Wick Before Burning (small text)

DESIGN:

Example 1: Gideon’s Bakehouse

This branding is closest to the style we want mainly because it has a very Time Burton aesthetic. The dark, macabre vibes in off-white/gold accents is the color palette we’d like to model in a way that fits with our Pumpkin logo (provided). They do a fantastic job of making something clean yet still "handmade" and spooky, which is what we’re trying to make here – especially with the dark background with gold and off-white or sepia elements, and select pops of color like the orange in the label above.

Example 2: Lichen & Limestone Candles

For the design itself, we like a few different brands as examples. First, see the “Example 1 – Lichen” candle label from the brand Lichen & Limestone. I like the placement of things on here in a general sense – logo in the top middle (possibly with “Peculiar” to the left and “Pumpkin” to the right, so the pumpkin logo is centered between, then the scent name big and prominent below that, and scent notes underneath that.

While this label has the more “ornate” embellishments that are a cross between gothic and Gatsby, I think our label should be a little more “wicked” or “organic”, since the main logo is a pumpkin – though it should still be clean and uncluttered so the CANDLE NAME and SCENT NOTES are prominent and don’t get “lost” in the design.

Example 3: Bones Coffee

Another good brand that has a very tight aesthetic that translates to other labels and varieties is Bones Coffee, also in the illustrated style (almost like a scratch board type of illustration): https://www.bonescoffee.com

I like this style in the sense that the lines and elements are broken/unconnected – so it’s more illustrated like a scratchboard type of style.

One other idea is something more Tim Burton inspired, where the backdrop has faded stripe (see below) and the middle area could be a creepy frame like in the Etsy listing, “Frames” below.

Lastly, to ensure you’ve read everything, please message me the word SPOOKY so I know you’ve paid attention to detail. If your entry or message doesn’t include this word, I’ll assume you don’t pay attention to details and thus will not consider your submission.

  This contest isn't sealed, so if that's a deterrent for you, you don't need to enter. Ultimately, I'll choose the design i feel fits my vision the best, and comment/direct message people who submit entries to request specific revisions.
