Contest Brief

This project is concerned with HANDMADE lettering and calligraphy. It involves gesture and the movement of lines to create a word. Your task is to let your brush dance on the page to the rhythm of a chosen piece of music. The page sizes are 8 1/2 x 11 inches each.

One page will be made up of 9 different freeform gesture drawings done in ink.

Page two will make use of a free flowing gesture movement to develop the expressive rhythm and flow of the letterform of a particular type of music.

The medium is black ink (done with brush or pen).

A spot color may also be used, but just in support of the title.

The songs i want you to choose between are Xanadu by Rush or Monster by Kanye West.

I have attached examples of other similar projects. If you do choose Monster then you can use themes from the album that song is on titled "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy", which is easily researchable for album art and such on google. Like the examples the second page which is a word for xanadu you could write xanadu or rock, for monster you can write either monster, rap, or hip-hop, both can have some lyrics from the songs on it like some examples i provided only if you think it would be effective. Of all the examples I think the "Metal" one is done the best in terms of getting a feel for the type of music the artist was listening to and the type of execution I'm looking for just for the two song options I provided.

if you wanna do the kanye one, it may be easier to take themes from the artist George Condo, look up "george condo kanye west" to see the artwork he did and maybe use his style to do this

  even though George Condo's work is full color, you still want final submission to be black lines with only one spot color at most?

  i suppose you could do like two colours but it was just a suggestion, whatever you think would be best, i just meant more the style of his work its very aggressive and correlates to hip hop and the song monster i find
