Contest Brief
MAIN IDEA
Design a black dragon & white phoenix in a yin yang shape for a shoulder tattoo.
I have no talent but still tried to draw a mockup of what I have in mind (attached) to give general direction.
Also attached is an idea of the size (and placement) I am looking for -- so about 3½ inches (9 cm) diameter.
ABOUT THE MOCKUP
The dragon is too fat (chinese dragons are snakes with legs) and its wings, legs and tail are horrible.
The phoenix (fenghuang) has a nice head but the entire body of feathers is uninspired.
This was the best I could do, but feel free to improvise on style.
OPTION: FIRE
Given dragons spew flames and phoenix are reborn of their ashes, I could see fire being used here.
Like maybe black flames on the dragon's side and white flames on the phoenix's side, to balance the yin yang shape.
Maybe the entire body of the phoenix could be flaming feathers... or just the whole thing engulfed in fire.
OPTION: TAILS
If you think the dragon & phoenix would look better with tails going down from the 'yin yang' area, go ahead.
Attached is an example of intertwined tails going down.
OPTION: PEARLS
Since pearls have their place is this mythology theme (often flaming pearls representing sun/moon), I could envision them in lieu of the dots in the yin yang symbol. The phoenix already has one subtly drawn on its body, and if the dragon had one around its head the placement would be good too.
All of those are just options. Don't force any design element.
