I want someone to tell me how this website works. Specifically, what is the method by which it verifies email addresses?

It seems like there's no good way of verifying without sending an email. Yet, I find it hard to believe that a website like this will send out all sorts of emails on behalf of random people on the internet -- isn't that asking for trouble? Especially since it checks so many address permutations of each name entered?

So I want someone to tell me what is the website doing behind the scenes to verify emails. If not exactly, then what are the most likely options?

I'm looking for the best-explained, most-accurate answer, and will likely end the contest early if I receive a great answer early.
