I have a set of partial 2-D drawings plus several 3-D scans of an existing vehicle that I want to turn into a fully customised car. The scope centres on the exterior body panels and key interior trim pieces; the chassis is out of scope for now. Your task is to transform the material I supply into a complete, production-ready DFM package. That means closing every dimensional gap, harmonising mating interfaces, selecting feasible manufacturing processes (e.g. stamped steel, aluminium extrusion, vacuum-formed ABS, or another option you can justify) and building in realistic tolerances and GD&T so a tier-one supplier can cut tools without further engineering work. Improved manufacturability and headache-free production are the priorities, but I am also open to small geometry tweaks that cut cost or add stiffness/impact durability where you see clear wins. I will share: • STEP files from my scans • Original 2-D PDFs/drawings • Target envelope, fastening strategy and trim-to-body attachment scheme Deliverables I need: • Native CAD models (SolidWorks or Inventor preferred) + neutral STEP/IGES • Fully dimensioned 2-D drawings with GD&T and surface finish callouts • BOM with suggested materials, gauges and coatings • Brief DFM report explaining process choices, draft angles, radii, clip/boss design, etc. • Revision log so I can track every change from the legacy data Acceptance criteria: 1. All interfaces close within the tolerance stack you define. 2. Panels can be produced with no undercuts that require complex tooling unless you flag and justify them. 3. Interior components align with OEM-style attachment points and meet minimum 2 mm clearance to electrical harnesses shown in the package file. 4. Final files open error-free and rebuild cleanly. Please let me know which CAD platform you will use and any previous automotive DFM examples you can show. If you spot quick cost-saving wins while modelling, flag them—I can adjust the spec in real time.

Hi, I can help with this. Automotive body panel DFM, tolerance stack analysis, GD&T and production-ready documentation for tier-one supply is work I have done before. Few technical questions before I share my approach. 1. What is the vehicle platform and target production volume ? Is this a low-volume custom build, kit car or a restyled production vehicle ? Volume directly drives process selection as a 50-unit run and a 500-unit run have very different tooling and DFM answers. 2. What scan resolution and format are the 3D scans in ? Structured light, photogrammetry or laser scan ? And are the STEP files already aligned to a common datum or do they need registration first ? 3. How many unique body panels are in scope approximately and are the interior trim pieces structural or purely aesthetic ? This will help me size the work properly before I share a timeline and approach. I will use SolidWorks for native CAD. Would be great to see the partial drawings and scan data first so I can align the approach in the right direction.

Notwithstanding my background mainly in video production and animation, I would love the fresh challenge to handle your automotive project. Admittedly, I might not have previous examples of automotive DFM in my portfolio but what I bring to the table is over 20 years of experience using CAD software for 3D modeling. As a Chief Motion Graphic Designer, I understand the importance of dimensional accuracy, aligning interface points, material selection and GD&T, all skills that will lend well to your project's objectives. While panel manufacturing feasibility is a top priority for me, I have an eye for detail and a knack for spotting potential areas for cost-saving without compromising on quality or reliability. This will ensure that any geometry tweaks I suggest serve two key purposes: reducing costs while enhancing the stiffness and impact durability of the customised car. Furthermore, as a full-time freelancer, one thing you won't have to worry about is communication or responsiveness. I'll maintain open lines of communication with detailed updates throughout your project, and ensure that the final files open error-free and rebuild cleanly. Let me make this transition from the world of animation to automotive DFM a creative and successful one by working with you on this project!
