A cardboard mock-up of mine must become a precise 3D CAD file so the machine shop can start cutting steel. I will share detailed photos, hand-written notes, and the exact length-width-height once we open the project; right now the overall footprint is larger than a smartphone but smaller than a briefcase. The end goal is a steel prototype that will later receive an anodized finish, so the model has to be design-for-manufacture ready—clear wall thicknesses, proper radii, and no impossible undercuts. A STEP (.stp / .step) file is the required deliverable, with the origin and units set correctly. Deliverables • Finished parametric 3D model in STEP format • (Optional but appreciated) native CAD file and a simple 2-D drawing with key dimensions Acceptance Criteria • All dimensions match the figures I supply to ±0.25 mm • Surfaces are watertight and error-free when imported into Fusion 360 / SolidWorks • File passes a quick DFM check for steel machining and later anodizing Please confirm which CAD platform you will use and your typical turnaround time once you see the reference material.

Converting a physical cardboard mock-up into a precision, machine-shop-ready STEP file is exactly the kind of work I do — 14+ years of SolidWorks experience with a strong focus on steel fabrication and DFM. I will build your model to all three acceptance criteria: ✓ ALL DIMENSIONS ±0.25mm — I work from your photos, hand-written notes, and exact L×W×H figures. Every feature will be modelled to the figures you supply, not estimated from photos. ✓ WATERTIGHT & ERROR-FREE — The STEP will open cleanly in Fusion 360 and SolidWorks with zero import errors, no non-manifold edges, no missing faces. ✓ DFM FOR STEEL + ANODIZING — I’ll apply correct wall thicknesses and radii for CNC steel machining, flag any impossible undercuts, and ensure minimum wall thicknesses and radii appropriate for anodizing are respected. Deliverables: STEP (.stp) with origin and units correctly set + native SolidWorks file + simple 2D drawing with key dimensions. CAD platform: SolidWorks (I will confirm once I see your reference material). Typical turnaround for a smartphone-to-briefcase-scale part: 2–3 days after receiving all photos and dimension notes. Ready to start immediately upon award.

Cardboard to steel means every dimension decision matters — radii that look fine in cardboard become stress concentrators in steel, and wall thicknesses that fold easily in paper need to be sized for machining rigidity and anodizing prep. I work in SolidWorks, translating physical prototypes into parametric models with DFM built in from the first sketch — proper internal radii for end mills, no sharp internal corners, and wall thicknesses that survive anodizing bath handling. I'll model from your photos and measurements, build fully parametric geometry within ±0.25mm, verify DFM for steel machining, and deliver clean STEP plus native SolidWorks file with 2D drawing. Send photos, notes, and dimensions and I'll confirm scope in 24 hours. Pricing will be decided after the final scope of the project is provided. I have a few questions: Steel grade — mild steel, stainless, or tool steel? This affects minimum radii and machining strategy. How many unique parts in the assembly, or is this a single monolithic piece? What anodizing type — Type II cosmetic or Type III hard coat? Determines surface prep requirements in the model.

Hello, I have extensive experience converting physical mock-ups, hand sketches, and reference photos into production-ready 3D CAD models for machined steel prototypes and custom fabricated components. I’ve created parametric models for CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, and anodized metal products with careful attention to tolerances, manufacturable geometry, wall thickness consistency, fillets, and clean watertight solids compatible with Fusion 360 and SolidWorks workflows. For your project, I will rebuild the cardboard prototype as a precise parametric 3D model using manufacturable steel geometry while validating dimensions, radii, and transitions to avoid machining or finishing issues later. The STEP file will be exported with correct units, origin placement, and clean topology suitable for downstream CAM and fabrication use, and I can also provide the native CAD source file along with a simple dimensioned drawing if needed. I typically work in SolidWorks and Fusion 360 depending on project requirements, and turnaround is usually fast once the photos, dimensions, and handwritten notes are reviewed. Best regards

Hello, I have 15+ years of experience in mechanical design, 3D modeling, and CAD/CAM for manufacturing. As a licensed professional engineer, I regularly convert physical prototypes and sketches into precise, production-ready 3D CAD files for fabrication. I understand you need an accurate, manufacturable CAD model of your cardboard mock-up that can be directly used by your machine shop—making sure all details, tolerances, and manufacturability considerations are addressed. > I will create a fully parametric 3D model from your photos, notes, and measurements. > You’ll receive a watertight STEP file, ready for steel machining and later anodizing. > I can provide the native CAD file and a simple 2D drawing with key dimensions if you like. > All features will follow your supplied dimensions to ±0.25 mm, with correct units and origin. I recently completed a similar project where I transformed a handmade prototype into a DFM-compliant CAD model for CNC steel parts, ensuring all requirements for finish and tolerances were met. Could you please confirm which CAD software your machine shop prefers (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, etc.)? This helps me tailor the files exactly to your workflow. Please contact me. Best Regards, Ronald
