I’m building a compact, desktop-size pick-and-place machine that can assemble PCBs up to 250 mm × 250 mm. The brief is to achieve repeatable, sub-0.1 mm component placement accuracy on a wide mix of SMD packages—from 0603 passives to SOT-23, SOIC, QFN and TQFP—while keeping the mechanics low-maintenance and the control stack fully open-source through OpenPnP. Accuracy in component placement outweighs raw speed, so every design choice should favour rigidity, backlash elimination and precise vision alignment. Mixed-technology boards are common in my workflow, meaning the feeder layout, nozzle options and camera calibration routines all need flexibility rather than being optimised for a single part family. Core expectations • Complete mechanical and motion-control design in CAD, sized to fit a 250 × 250 mm work envelope • Recommended drive system, motors, rails and control electronics that balance cost with long-term accuracy • OpenPnP configuration files, vision pipeline setup and nozzle library tuned for 0603-to-TQFP work • Assembly drawings and a BOM that can be sourced with globally available components • Maintenance guidelines outlining lubrication intervals, belt or lead-screw tensioning and easy swap of consumables Acceptance will be based on a simulated pick-and-place job using your OpenPnP profile: the head must consistently place 50 test components within ±0.05 mm of target and finish a repeat run without skipped steps or vision failures.
