Two things about food packaging that decide whether artwork can actually be printed, and both are easier to build in than to retrofit. The first is the legal panel. Food and beverage packs carry mandatory information — ingredients, allergens declared in the required way, nutrition, net quantity, manufacturer, best-before, and a barcode with its own quiet zone. That block takes real estate, and it usually lands on the exact panel the illustration was designed to wrap across. Designing the decoration first and discovering the legal panel afterwards is the most common reason packaging artwork gets rebuilt. The second is colour. Vintage looks come from a restrained palette with confident flat areas, which is fortunate, because that is also what prints well and cheaply. Deciding early whether this is CMYK or spot colours changes how the illustrations should be drawn — and if it is spot, a limited palette costs less per unit for the life of the product. So I would start from the dieline, place the legal panel and the barcode, then design around them. Everything built as live vectors on the dieline, layered, CMYK, fonts supplied or outlined, bleed and safety respected.
