More than 80% of the population in Indonesia today are Muslim, which make Islam the most dominant religion in the country. With the effects of globalisation and freedom of expression, an increasing number muslims are coming out of the closet, identifying themselves as part of the LGBT community in Indonesia. This has raised many controversial questions and concerns such as whether sexuality/gender will be a potential confounder to their religion and faith or whether they will receive equal rights as any other people. In this research essay, I will discuss the various political and social concerns arising from this issue.
