PLEASE READ the entire post before responding. Auto responses will be unlikely to be successful. This is a Long Post, and the question was asked to Chat GPT and their answer is also shown below. I would like to know from the users here what path to follow. My gallery is large, over 200,000 image and 400 galleries, plus over 100 Tag categories. I run a Word Press website Current Version 7.0 that uses NextGen gallery V4.2.1 and NextGen Pro V4.2.0, (now called Imagely). It does not work well now it has been upgraded to version 4. The Front end Public View displays as expected, but all the faults are in the back end Administration side. Some faults, but not all; are unable to move images as Gallery dropdown does not show, Unable to sort images effectively in Admin Gallery view as only the first page of images is included in the sort selection. No image search feature in backend as there was previously. PLUS MANY OTHERS…. Their solution was to reinstall the Legacy version of Next Gen Gallery and work with that, however, now that is having issues displaying some galleries in the Admin back end. Their help has looked, (and was polite and as helpful as they could be) but essentially, say the features that worked previously in the V3… of Next Gen gallery are not included in the V4 upgrade. This essentially makes it a downgrade. I am looking for solutions. Do I get a developer to work on it, given that the basic Next Gen Plugin V4. seems to be at fault ? Do I migrate to a new Gallery plugin, such as Foo Gallery, which I have tried and found to be to basic and does not support Tags ? It is important that I have Tags working and a very good search engine. I have tried Foo gallery and it is a good replacement with import for next gen, however it does not support tags which is really important, although it does have an import feature from Next Gen. I also tried Modula which also does not support Tags. What are my options ??? HERE is what Chat GPT has to say What you are describing is not really a “broken website” problem — it is a platform architecture problem caused by the move from legacy NextGEN Gallery / Imagely v3 to v4. From your description, the important point is this: your frontend still works your backend workflow is broken critical DAM-style features disappeared: tagging workflow image search bulk organisation proper sorting across pages moving images between galleries admin usability That means the plugin is no longer functioning as a true image management system for your use case. And based on what you described from Imagely support: “those features are no longer included” …this is unlikely to be fixed properly by waiting for updates. So your real decision is:Option 1 — Stay on Imagely and hire a developer OR Option 2 — Migrate away from Imagely entirely My recommendation Given your requirements: heavy image library tags are essential backend search is essential likely thousands of images long-term maintainability matters I would NOT invest heavily in custom development on top of NextGEN v4. Why? Because your issue is not a bug. It is a design direction change in the plugin. A developer can patch symptoms: dropdown fixes pagination fixes admin JS fixes …but they cannot easily restore: the old workflow model the legacy admin architecture missing search/tagging behaviour removed UX features You could easily spend thousands and still remain trapped in a plugin ecosystem that is moving away from your [login to view URL] core issue: NextGEN became gallery-first instead of library-first Older NextGEN behaved more like: a Digital Asset Manager (DAM) image database searchable media catalog Version 4 behaves more like: a visual gallery builder ecommerce/photo-sales platform block-oriented frontend plugin That is why power-user backend features [login to view URL] best long-term solution Move image organisation into WordPress itself Instead of relying on a gallery plugin to manage: tags categories metadata searching relationships …you move all that into the native WordPress media system. This is the important conceptual shift. Then: gallery plugins become “display layers” not the master database This avoids being trapped again [login to view URL] architecture I would seriously recommendMedia Library Assistant (MLA) Media Library Assistant This is probably the closest thing to the old “power user” NextGEN workflow. It gives you: image tags categories custom taxonomies advanced search filtering bulk editing EXIF/IPTC support dynamic galleries searchable media management Most importantly: it works with the native WordPress media library This is [login to view URL] pair it with a frontend gallery plugin You then choose a frontend renderer such as:Option A — Photonic Photonic Gallery Good for: large image sets filtering albums dynamic galleries photographers More technical but [login to view URL] B — Justified Image Grid Justified Image Grid Extremely popular with photographers. Excellent: filtering tagging performance visual layout dynamic image loading This combination: MLA + Justified Image Grid …is honestly one of the strongest replacements for old-school NextGEN [login to view URL] FooGallery and Modula disappointed you Because they are mostly: presentation-focused gallery plugins They are not: image database systems asset management systems So: tags are shallow search is weak organisation tools are limited You already discovered this [login to view URL] I would NOT doDo not: continue relying on Legacy mode long term build more dependency on NextGEN shortcodes custom-patch NextGEN heavily spend months debugging Imagely admin issues Legacy mode will eventually become: incompatible insecure unstable Especially with future WordPress [login to view URL] migration path This is the safest path I’d recommend:Phase 1 — Stabilise current site Before touching anything: full backup database backup image folder backup staging site clone [login to view URL] 2 — Export / preserve metadata You must preserve: tags captions alt text descriptions gallery relationships This is the most important [login to view URL] 3 — Install MLA Start organising images inside: native WP Media Library taxonomies tags Phase 4 — Install frontend gallery system Likely: Justified Image Grid OR Photonic Phase 5 — Convert galleries gradually Do not attempt: “big bang migration” Instead: migrate gallery-by-gallery test SEO preserve URLs where possible Should you hire a developer? Yes — but for migration architecture, not for fixing NextGEN. You want someone experienced in: WordPress media systems database migration custom taxonomies gallery migrations shortcode conversion NOT simply: “WordPress plugin troubleshooting” Very different skill [login to view URL] most important thing Your real asset is NOT the gallery plugin. It is: your image library metadata tags organisation structure The goal is to free that data from a proprietary plugin ecosystem. That is the strategic solution here.

Hi, I can help review your current NextGEN setup and plan a safer long-term solution for your large WordPress image library. Since tags, backend search, bulk organization, and gallery management are critical, I’d focus on migration architecture rather than patching plugin issues. I can help preserve metadata, test suitable gallery/media tools, set up staging, and move things gradually so the frontend stays stable while improving the admin workflow. Best regards, Ranjika.

Hi, With over 15 years of experience in Full-stack and Backend Development, I bring a broad skill set to tackle your complex WordPress plugin issue. I understand the importance of a fully-functioning image management system considering your extensive gallery and tagging needs. Although NextGen Gallery may no longer cater to these requirements as effectively in its version 4, my skills in WordPress and portfolio working on alternative gallery systems such as Foo Gallery and Modula qualify me to find practical solutions for you. I acknowledge your need for tags working and a comprehensive search engine, which I consider vital aspects of any reputable gallery plugin. Since your backend workflow is disrupted, it's crucial to focus on long-term maintainability. Pouring time, effort, and money into custom development on NextGen v4 might not address the core issues you're facing. Instead, I propound the idea of moving image organization into WordPress itself. As a developer who thrives on turning complex requirements into working software, this perfectly aligns with my expertise. From planning and architecture to development and deployment, I provide end-to-end solutions that are secure, scalable, and maintainable - all qualities essential in managing a large image library like yours. In conclusion, choosing me means opting for pragmatic solutions that go beyond symptom patches. I’m offering you a multi-faceted approach: migrating to a Thanks!

Dear Client, I have carefully reviewed your detailed project description and the complex challenges you face with NextGEN Gallery’s transition from v3 to v4. Your need for a robust backend image management system with essential features such as tagging, advanced search, and bulk organization is clear—capabilities that are unfortunately deprecated in NextGEN v4’s architecture. Based on my extensive experience in WordPress backend development and plugin architecture, I concur with the strategic approach recommended: migrating the image management to the native WordPress Media Library using Media Library Assistant (MLA) for taxonomy and metadata control, coupled with a powerful front-end gallery plugin like Justified Image Grid or Photonic. This yields a future-proof, maintainable, and scalable solution free from plugin lock-in. I specialize in complex WordPress migrations, custom taxonomy integration, data preservation, and shortcode conversion necessary for such transitions. I propose a phased migration plan ensuring metadata integrity, SEO preservation, and minimal disruption through staging and backups. I am confident in delivering a clean, maintainable architecture tailored to your large image library and long-term maintainability requirements. I look forward to discussing how I can support your project efficiently. Best Regards, Lazar

Greetings, It seems you’re facing significant challenges with your large gallery on WordPress, particularly after the upgrade to NextGen V4. The backend issues you mentioned, like the inability to manage images effectively and the loss of critical features, can be frustrating. My approach would involve assessing your current setup and helping you transition to a more robust solution that meets your needs. I recommend moving towards a system that integrates with WordPress's native media library, like Media Library Assistant (MLA). This would help restore essential functionalities such as tagging and advanced searching. I can guide you through the migration process, ensuring your metadata and organization structure are preserved, while implementing a frontend gallery solution that suits your requirements. I have experience in WordPress media systems and database migrations, which makes me well-suited to tackle this project. Best regards, Saba Ehsan

I don’t think this is simply a “broken plugin” issue anymore. From what you described, the public side of the website still works, but the admin side — where you actually manage the galleries — has lost many of the features you depend on. Since Imagely support confirmed some of these features were removed in V4, this looks more like a change in direction of the plugin rather than temporary bugs. With a collection as large as yours (200,000+ images), I’d personally avoid spending large amounts trying to patch NextGEN. A developer may fix a few backend problems, but restoring the old workflow completely could become expensive and unreliable over time. A better long-term option may be to gradually move your image library into WordPress’ main media system using a tool like Media Library Assistant, then use another gallery plugin only for displaying galleries. That gives you more control over tags, search and organisation without depending fully on one plugin. A few important questions: * Are your images stored in normal WordPress uploads or inside NextGEN folders? * Is keeping current gallery URLs/SEO important? * Do you sell images or only display them? * Has the backend already become slow with this many images? Looking forward to your response.

I understand the pain points of upgrading to newer versions, only to find vital functions and workflows missing. My approach would not just be about fixing symptoms but looking for sustainable solutions. I value quality work, fast delivery and building long-term relationships with my clients. The satisfaction of my clients is priority for me - which is why I offer 2-3 revisions if required by the client but try to ensure no revision needed! Hi! I'll audit your NextGEN v4 backend issues, assess whether a targeted fix is feasible, and if migration is the better path I'll evaluate tag-compatible alternatives (such as Envira or a custom solution) and handle a safe, tested migration preserving all 200,000+ images, 400 galleries, and 100+ tag categories without breaking your live frontend. Any must-have features I should prioritize beyond tags and backend search?

Hi, I carefully read your entire post, and I completely understand that this is not just a simple plugin issue. What you are facing is a large scale media architecture and workflow problem caused by the transition from legacy NextGEN functionality into the newer Imagely V4 ecosystem. With 200,000+ images, 400 galleries, and extensive tag dependencies, your website operates more like a Digital Asset Management platform than a standard WordPress gallery site. I agree with the core conclusion that continuing to patch NextGEN V4 is likely not the best long term strategy. My approach would focus on protecting your real asset which is your image library, metadata, tags, search structure, and gallery relationships. I can help design and execute a staged migration strategy using WordPress native media architecture combined with a scalable gallery framework such as MLA with advanced frontend rendering systems. The goal would be stability, fast backend management, preserved SEO, preserved metadata, and a sustainable future workflow. I also work carefully with staging environments, backup systems, database migration, taxonomy mapping, shortcode conversion, and large WordPress media libraries to minimize risk during transition. I would be grateful for the opportunity to help you stabilize and future proof this platform and will gladly accept any feedback you may have. Best, Justin
