OVERVIEW: We are building a machine learning system for automated drill core analysis at mineral exploration sites across Australia. We require an experienced exploration geologist with hands-on drill core logging experience to annotate high resolution drill core tray photographs for AI training purposes. This is a remote, part-time contract role. Work is performed via a web-based annotation tool (CVAT) at your own pace. Payment is per image annotated, with a quality bonus for high accuracy. ═══════════════════════════════════════════════ MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS — YOU MUST HAVE ALL OF THESE ═══════════════════════════════════════════════ ✅ Minimum 3 years field experience logging diamond drill core (DDH) ✅ Demonstrated ability to identify the following IN CORE (not hand specimens): - Lithology contacts and boundaries between rock types - Fractures, joints and structural breaks - Quartz, carbonate and sulphide veins - Sulphide mineralisation (pyrite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite) - Alteration zones (chlorite, carbonate, silica, sericite) ✅ Familiarity with RQD (Rock Quality Designation) measurement ✅ Understanding of JORC reporting standards ✅ Experience working on mineral exploration projects (gold, copper, nickel preferred) ✅ Ability to work with high resolution digital core photography DO NOT APPLY IF: ❌ Your core logging experience is limited to academic or theoretical study ❌ You have not physically logged core in the field ❌ You cannot distinguish between a lithology boundary and a tray edge in a photograph ❌ You have no experience with Precambrian or Proterozoic geology ═══════════════════════════════════════════════ WHAT YOU WILL BE ANNOTATING ═══════════════════════════════════════════════ You will annotate high resolution HyLogger RGB line scan images of drill core trays (11,216 x 3,949 pixels, full resolution, WA/SA/NT mineral exploration holes). For each image you will draw precise bounding boxes and polygons identifying: 1. FRACTURES AND STRUCTURAL BREAKS - Natural fractures and joints (not saw cuts or handling breaks) - Fault zones and shear zones - Structural fabric (foliation, cleavage) - Do NOT annotate: tray edges, saw cuts, plastic dividers 2. VEINS - Quartz veins (white/grey, glassy) - Carbonate veins (white/cream, dull) - Sulphide veins (metallic, dark) - Vein thickness must be visible — do not annotate hairline traces - Do NOT annotate: colour banding, bedding, foliation 3. SULPHIDE MINERALISATION - Pyrite (cubic, brass-yellow, glassy lustre) - Chalcopyrite (brassy-yellow, iridescent tarnish) - Pyrrhotite (bronze, magnetic) - Arsenopyrite (silver, euhedral) - Minimum 2mm grain size visible in image - Do NOT annotate: iron staining, limonite, rust-coloured weathering 4. LITHOLOGY BOUNDARIES - The CONTACT between two visibly different rock types within the core - Must be drawn at the actual rock contact, not at tray divisions - Must span the full width of the core piece, not the tray - Do NOT annotate: tray borders, depth labels, header areas, tray dividers 5. ALTERATION ZONES - Chlorite alteration (green, fine-grained) - Carbonate alteration (pale, dull white patches) - Silica alteration (white, cherty, hard) - Sericite/muscovite alteration (silky sheen, pale green/white) - Do NOT annotate: drilling mud, contamination, staining ═══════════════════════════════════════════════ COMPETENCY TEST — REQUIRED BEFORE ENGAGEMENT ═══════════════════════════════════════════════ ALL applicants must complete a paid competency test before full engagement. The test consists of: - 10 core tray images provided via secure download link - You will annotate all 5 categories on each image using CVAT - Time allowed: 2 hours maximum - Payment: AUD $50 flat fee regardless of outcome - Results reviewed by a senior geologist within 48 hours You will be assessed on: ✓ Correct identification of lithology boundaries AT THE ROCK CONTACT ✓ Correct identification of fractures vs saw cuts vs handling breaks ✓ Correct identification of sulphide minerals vs iron staining ✓ Correct identification of veins vs colour banding ✓ Annotation precision — bounding boxes drawn tightly around features ✓ Consistency across all 10 images ═══════════════════════════════════════════════ ROLE DETAILS ═══════════════════════════════════════════════ Project scope: ~10,000 images (full dataset engagement after test) Rate: AUD $0.40 per image (experienced) or AUD $0.25 per image (graduate) Quality bonus: AUD $0.10 per image if >95% quality score on random audit Estimated earnings: AUD $4,000 — $5,000 for full project Timeline: 1-2 months at your own pace Tool: CVAT (free, browser-based, we can provide access if needed) Format: COCO JSON export Communication: Weekly progress check-in via email ═══════════════════════════════════════════════ HOW TO APPLY ═══════════════════════════════════════════════ In your application you MUST include: 1. Your years of drill core logging experience and the projects you worked on (company name, commodity, location, approximate metres logged) 2. A brief description (3-5 sentences) of how you would distinguish the following IN A CORE TRAY PHOTOGRAPH: a) A lithology boundary vs a tray divider b) Pyrite vs iron oxide staining c) A natural fracture vs a saw cut 3. Confirmation that you have used or are willing to learn CVAT or similar annotation software 4. Your availability in hours per week Applications that do not answer all three questions will not be considered. ═══════════════════════════════════════════════ ABOUT THE PROJECT ═══════════════════════════════════════════════ This annotation work forms part of a larger AI development project aimed at automating drill core analysis at Australian mineral exploration sites. The training dataset consists of high resolution HyLogger imagery from WA, SA and NT exploration programs covering gold, copper, nickel and iron ore targets. Your annotations will directly train a computer vision model that will eventually analyse core at the drill site in real time — your geological expertise is the foundation of the entire system.
