My Windows-based EC2 instance suddenly refuses Remote Desktop connections. Each time I try to log in I get a “too many attempts” style message, then the session closes. Rebooting from the AWS console and resetting the RDP listening port haven’t helped, so I need someone who knows the ins and outs of AWS networking, IAM permissions and Windows Server recovery modes to bring the instance back online via RDP. What I’ve confirmed so far • The security group still allows port 3389 from my IP. • The instance status checks show “2/2 passed.” • Password and key pair are unchanged, so the issue appears to be connection-level rather than credentials. Your task is to diagnose the root cause—whether it’s network throttling, NLA mis-config, mis-cached credentials, or something deeper—and restore reliable RDP access. Please be comfortable with SSM Session Manager, EC2 Rescue, and standard Windows Server troubleshooting tools so we avoid unnecessary downtime. Deliverable: a working Remote Desktop session and a short note summarising the fix applied, so I can replicate it if the problem recurs.

Hello, I understand you need to restore reliable RDP access to a Windows EC2 instance where port 3389 and instance status checks are healthy, but connections are failing with a “too many attempts” style error. Here’s what I can provide: Diagnose AWS networking, Windows RDP, NLA, credential/session, and connection throttling issues Use SSM Session Manager, EC2 Rescue, and Windows Server tools for recovery with minimal downtime Restore stable RDP access and provide a concise troubleshooting/fix report for future incidents I bring over 4+ years of experience in AWS, Windows Server, cloud infrastructure, system administration, and troubleshooting, with a focus on resolving production connectivity issues safely and efficiently. Just to clarify a few things: Is SSM Session Manager currently configured and showing the instance as online? Did the issue begin after any Windows update, configuration change, or security-policy change? I can start with a safe diagnosis and avoid unnecessary instance changes or downtime. Please come to the chat box to discuss more about your project. Best regards Indresh Kushwaha

Hi there, I can help restore your Windows EC2 RDP access today without causing unnecessary downtime. Since your status checks are 2/2 passed and Security Group port 3389 is open, the "too many attempts / immediate session close" behavior points directly to an OS-level issue—commonly Network Level Authentication (NLA) handshake failures, misconfigured terminal services, account lockout policies, or corrupted session cache. How I will diagnose and fix this: 1. Access the instance securely via AWS Systems Manager (SSM) Session Manager / Fleet Manager (or run AWS-provided automation documents via Run Command). 2. Inspect the Windows Event Viewer logs (Application, System, and RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS) to identify the exact disconnection code. 3. If NLA or policy lockout is the culprit, modify the registry/policies via PowerShell (e.g., toggling UserAuthentication or resetting the TermService listener) to regain instant RDP access. 4. If SSM agent is offline, attach the root EBS volume to a temporary rescue instance or run AWSSupport-ExecuteEC2Rescue to repair registry settings offline. 5. Provide a clear summary note detailing the root cause and the exact commands applied so you can replicate it if it ever happens again. I regularly deploy and troubleshoot Windows & Linux instances on AWS and am ready to get started right away. Looking forward to your message so we can resolve this quickly. Best regards, Muhammad Bilal

I’d troubleshoot this from the connection path inward rather than repeatedly rebooting the instance or changing RDP settings blindly. Since the security group and EC2 status checks are already healthy, I’d verify the remaining AWS networking path and then inspect the Windows side through SSM Session Manager or an appropriate recovery route, focusing on the RDP service, Windows Firewall, NLA/session state and any account or connection-attempt lockout that could be producing the current behaviour. I’ll avoid destructive changes and keep track of everything modified so the fix can be reproduced or rolled back. Once access is restored I’ll verify a fresh Remote Desktop connection rather than stopping at a configuration change, and provide the short troubleshooting/fix summary you requested. I can start immediately and would expect a bounded RDP recovery like this to be completed within the same day, assuming the required AWS/SSM recovery access is available.

Try this before you hire anyone. It costs nothing and it tells us both what we are dealing with: mstsc /admin from your machine. Your symptoms point at one thing in particular. Reboots not helping rules out the usual cause, which is the two administrative sessions being held by orphaned disconnected logins, because a restart clears those. What does survive a reboot is the Remote Desktop Services licensing grace period running out. Windows Server gives 120 days without a license server; after that the RD Session Host blocks ordinary RDP sessions, administrators included, and the connection closes the way you describe. mstsc /admin attaches to the console session instead, which does not go through that check. If that gets you in, the real fix is a decision rather than a trick: either the RD Session Host role should not be on this instance and comes off, or it stays and gets a license server with CALs. Which one depends on what the box is actually for, and I would want to look before saying. If mstsc /admin does not get you in either, I come in through SSM Session Manager, which needs no inbound port at all, and work the account lockout policy, NLA and the RDP listener from a shell. Either way you get the working session plus the note explaining what it was, so you recognise it if it returns. Tell me the Windows Server version and whether anyone ever installed the RD Session Host role, and I can be more specific than this. INR 1500.
