In one project, the edge case was state drift between “Pause” and “Resume” when comms dropped, so we designed a strict state machine and a single source of truth for machine status. One hidden dependency is the workflow state model. If states are not explicit, later PLC mapping becomes messy and safety interlocks turn into UI hacks. I would structure this as MVVM with a machine service interface and two implementations: SimulatorMachineService and BeckhoffMachineService (stubbed now). My responsibility is to keep operator actions safe and predictable, so “Start” is only enabled when interlocks and the current state allow it.
