Cursive is where the OCR route fails quietly, and it fails in the worst way, because it produces real English words that happen to be the wrong ones, and those slide straight past a proofread. So I type these by hand and read every page twice, once against the scan and once cold. The other thing that bites on this job is Word itself. Typing 1. at the start of a line makes Word build an automatic numbered list that renumbers itself the moment you edit anything above it, so a source page that restarts at 1, or skips a number, comes out wrong and stays wrong. I turn autoformat off first and apply list styles deliberately, and headings get real heading styles, so the structure survives if you ever need a table of contents. I've done a lot of this. Twelve years of typing up rehearsal notes, choral markings and curriculum from handwriting, some of it my own poor handwriting, and I clean up document and spreadsheet data for a living. Where a word is genuinely ambiguous I keep the original and mark it with the page number so you can settle it, and I won't quietly pick the likelier reading. Diagrams get [diagram here] on their own line the way you asked. Do any of the pages have margin notes or writing running sideways up the edge, and where do you want those to land in the docx?
