Three months ago, I started this crazy journey of wanting to do more to help high school/college students. After slaving away every night for hours, I have finally finished a nonfiction book that I plan on using with high school students or individuals that are trying to execute their college plan. As the competition to get into reputable colleges continues to escalate among high school and college students in the United States. I strongly believe that the close to 15 million high school students and countless individuals are putting themselves under unnecessary pressure to succeed at all cost. Any misstep in their individual pursuit to stand out above the crowd can have a devastating impact on their self-esteem and confidence. It is a very quick nonfiction read, that sets out to explain the six key insights that I have learned as I set out to execute my own personal college plan under the current competitive landscape. Book Overview: Over the past twenty-four years, I have been laser-focused on achieving my two simple goals of obtaining a prestigious college degree and getting hired at an illustrious company. In my journey, I have encountered thousands of individuals with the exact same two goals. Unfortunately, a large majority of these individuals have not been able to achieve either of the two goals, which begs the following question: Why do the majority of people living in the United States, 66% of them to be exact, never graduate from college? Through my conversations and research, I have found that the most overwhelmingly-cited reasons for individuals who fail to get their college degree are: 1. My parents and I cannot afford to pay for college tuition 2. School is not for me. I get poor grades and struggle to keep up with the schoolwork. Based on my twenty-four year journey, it is really interesting to me that a lack of money and poor grades keep millions of Americans from obtaining their college degree. These top two reasons seem like very legitimate and plausible excuses that can definitely prevent someone from getting their college degree. So, why is it so interesting to me, you may ask? Fourteen years ago, I earned straight F’s in high school and subsequently dropped out. Shortly thereafter, I started working as an assembly line worker at a plastic bucket company. I was eventually fired from my factory job where my sole responsibility was to put handles on buckets. Despite a disastrous start, I was able to get my MBA from the University of Michigan. I also currently work for the largest computer software company in the world – Microsoft. In my book I set out to prove that no mistake is to great to overcome in the pursuit of obtaining a college education. I whole-heartedly believe that this inspirational story can have a lasting impact on individuals. I leverage clever analogies to make my key points resonate with the reader (at least I think they are clever). I am planning to continue to heavily invest in this project out of my own pocket because I want to have an impact on the status quo and help as many students.
