222522 help debugging new website

I am relatively new to XHTML/CSS. I am a musician setting up a website to promote myself as an oboist and to advertise my reedmaking business. The past two weeks I have immersed myself in XHTML/CSS (no prior experience), and at this point I am very nearly satisfied with my site. I have web hosting already and the pages are published (though I have not filled in the entire contents of some of them). All pages pass W3C validation for XHTML and CSS. Right now I'm looking things over on other computers to see how everything looks on other browsers. There are a few bugs I can't figure out how to eliminate. What I'm looking for is someone who can look over things and explain to me what is causing this or that bug, so that I know how to deal with these problems again in the future. I've posted questions in a few forums, but so far I haven't had much luck finding effective solutions. Everything looks just fine on my Macbook with Safari, Opera, Firefox, and Camino. The problems are:

Problem #1: On PC's with IE6 and IE7, my links have no top or bottom borders. It looks as if the padding has also been reduced. The left border I've eliminated intentionally, the right border shows up just fine, but the top and bottom borders are not there.

Problem #2: On a PC with IE6, the horizontal rule underneath h3 is a big thick bar. It should be only 1px high. Note that I've used a <div> for this, not an <hr>.

Problem #3: On a PC with Mozilla Firefox, I'm getting dotted outlines of active links. I was able to eliminate these outlines on Firefox for Mac's with a{outline-style:none}, but it still shows up on Firefox for PC.

Problem #4: On a Mac with Safari 2.0.4, the pic on the front page is stretched out from left to right, seriously distorted. It's also scooted to the right a bit. This is not a problem at all on my Macbook with Safari 3.0.4.

Problem #5: I'm having a difficult time getting my pic on the front page to look good. Depending on what I do to it, it's either grainy and pixelated, or else blurry. It's decent quality to begin with... professionally done, not just a snapshot from my cheap digital camera. I've applied minimal compression and have used my photo editing software to scale it down to the necessary size, rather than haveing the stylesheet instruct browsers to scale it down.

Problem #6: On my Macbook with Safari, I can't get the font-style in the submit buttons to change. I can control it in other browsers with <input id="button" type="submit" value="subscribe" /> and then #button{font-family: "times new roman", times, serif;

font-size: 15px} in the stylesheet.
