The system needs to be as versatile as possible, and modular in design. It is expected to use I2C to control standard digital level control chips.

System overview

The purpose of the project is to design a flexible digital audio level control and display system for use in professional recording equipment.

The system needs to be able to control the volume level of up to 64 individual audio channels and display VU meter levels for each channel as well as the current fader position.

The display and controls need to be simple but intuitive.

It is also necessary to be able to store the settings of every channel's levels onto a removable digital media such as USB stick or SD card and be able to recall those settings at a later session.

The system would need to be able to be configurable to be able to use standard rotary potentiometers OR touch-faders, depending on which application it is used within.

Essential features:

Faders: Ability to detect number of faders. Either by setting a switch on the motherboard, or software autodetection.

Chain-able: So that a number of boards can be chained together (up to 64) faders could be detected and displayed on the screen (not all at once), but as many as is practicable...maybe 8, so you'd have to be able to switch between other “Banks” of faders.

Maybe self-contained multiples of 8, each set with it's own processor and display, but capable of communicating with the next set of 8 controls and display via a common data bus.

Mute: Each channel must have an easy one-touch Mute function. Un-mute must instantly restore the level to it's original position.

Pan. Must be able to use a PAN control to pan levels left or right. Between 2 channels. Must be able to select which channels are panning relative to each other.

Save settings to USB or SD card. Must display/create a unique file reference for each session and (at the least) display it so that the engineer can note it for later reference/recall.

VU meters displayed. For selected bank of (or active) faders. Ability to display VU meter for selected channels.

Suggestions: Add buttons near the display. These buttons would be used to scroll through options, make selections, and “OK” to complete commands. These could be the standard layout of “Up”, “Down” “Left” “Right” with a centre “Enter/OK” button.

To “Name” a session to save. Scroll to session menu. Select “save as”. Menu displays simple Alphabet and number layout. Scroll around using buttons to select letters/numbers. Scroll to OK. Session saved to USB/SD with that name.

Desirable but not essential features:

During “idle” time blank the display and show full screen colour company logo. Maybe rotate it.

A double-tap on the touch fader switches it into (and out of) “fine” mode. EG: Normal mode – sliding finger from bottom to top would give a 0 to15dB range....User would slide finger to (EG) 10dB, double-tap would then change the strip to be 5dB bottom to top scale so that they could fine-tune to (EG) 10.2dB to 11dB over the whole top to bottom range.

Ability to name faders? EG: Channel 1 – named as “Drum1” ????

Swap faders into “Groups”. EG: Channel 1, 2, 4, 7 into “Group 1”, all controlled from their relative (current) position by 1 “Group” fader. This would mean there would have to be an easy/intuitive way to “Un-group” a fader, re-set it's level, then “Re-group” it.

Consider: Leave a spare port or data bus that can be used for future add-on product/s. This could be a wired-remote for the faders and Mute functions. This would be a separate project in the very near future if the demand is there.

Consider addition of wireless remote expansion in the future (BT, IR or RF).

Also, consider midi control capability as an upgrade/add-on future product (leave spare port/connector. Then, it's mostly software protocols and MIDI lookup).
