This project involves a portable, foldable electronic device designed for shooting sports and training applications. The system detects supersonic projectiles passing through a target plane by capturing their shock wave. It uses eight high-bandwidth MEMS microphones (digital I2S output, 80 kHz frequency range) arranged in a diamond/plus-shaped mechanical frame. By precisely measuring the arrival time differences (TDOA) of the shock wave at each microphone, the system calculates the projectile’s speed and its exact intersection point with the sensor plane. This point is then projected onto a virtual target to determine the hit coordinates, score, and hit/miss status. All results are transmitted wirelessly (LoRa or WiFi) to a mobile device or scoreboard in real time. System architecture: 8 satellite microphone PCBs, each housing one digital I2S MEMS microphone, mounted at fixed positions on a foldable frame. Two STM32 microcontrollers on the main board — each reads four synchronized I2S microphone channels and performs real-time pulse detection and accurate time-of-arrival estimation. One ESP32 microcontroller serves as the central controller: it collects timestamp data from both STM32 units, runs the TDOA-based localization algorithm (including temperature compensation), and manages wireless communication (WiFi + LoRa). Environmental sensor (BME280) for temperature/humidity correction of the speed of sound. Battery-powered with a rechargeable Li-Po cell and power management. What needs to be done: Mechanical design (foldable diamond frame, enclosures, microphone mounts) Electronics design (schematics & PCB layout for satellite boards and the main board) Firmware for the STM32s (multi-channel I2S DMA, shock-wave detection, sub-sample time interpolation) Firmware for the ESP32 (TDOA solver, hit projection, WiFi/LoRa communication, calibration) System integration and validation

Hi I am an embedded systems engineer with over 16 years of experience. I have extensive experience with STM32/ESP32 based products, high-speed sensor acquisition, digital MEMS microphones, DMA timing, wireless links, battery power design and complete product development from concept through prototype and production. This is a serious timing and calibration problem, not just a PCB job. I can help with the foldable frame concept, satellite and main board schematics/PCB, STM32 I2S acquisition with pulse timing, ESP32 coordination, TDOA solver, temperature compensation, WiFi/LoRa reporting and validation of hit position accuracy. My usual approach would be to first lock the microphone geometry, timing budget and calibration method, then move into PCB/mechanical design and firmware bring-up so the electronics and algorithm are tested together. A few points I would like to confirm are the required scoring accuracy, expected projectile distance from the sensor plane, preferred target size, whether you need prototype manufacturing files only or full assembled prototype support, and the mobile/scoreboard protocol expected. Please contact me to discuss details.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hi, This is a fascinating mixed-signal embedded system combining precision timing, DSP, RF, and mechanical integration. The architecture you've outlined—dual STM32s for deterministic I2S acquisition with an ESP32 handling localization and communications—is well suited for achieving accurate TDOA measurements. I can support the complete development cycle: foldable mechanical design, KiCad schematics and PCB layout for the main and satellite microphone boards, power management, and firmware for both the STM32 and ESP32. Particular attention will be given to synchronized I2S capture using DMA, low-jitter timestamping, signal integrity, RF layout, battery operation, and manufacturability. The ESP32 firmware will integrate timestamp data, apply temperature compensation using the BME280, execute the TDOA localization algorithm, project impact coordinates, and transmit results over Wi-Fi and LoRa in real time. I'll also assist with calibration, validation, and system bring-up to ensure repeatable performance. Deliverables include native design files, manufacturing outputs (Gerbers, BOM, CPL), firmware source, documentation, and validation notes. I have experience with STM32, ESP32, high-speed embedded systems, PCB design, wireless communication, and sensor integration, with a strong focus on reliable, production-ready hardware. I'd be happy to discuss timing requirements, microphone selection, and localization accuracy targets before we begin.

Hi, I can help develop the foldable electronic projectile detection system, including hardware architecture, STM32/ESP32 firmware planning, microphone PCB design, TDOA localization logic, wireless communication, and prototype validation. The best solution is to first finalize the sensor geometry, microphone positions, sampling/timing requirements, synchronization method, frame dimensions, power requirements, and calibration process. Then I’ll design the satellite microphone boards, main control board, firmware structure for STM32 I2S/DMA timestamp capture, ESP32 data processing, temperature compensation, and WiFi/LoRa result transmission. I’m comfortable with STM32, ESP32, I2S MEMS microphones, DMA-based data capture, embedded firmware, PCB layout, LoRa/WiFi communication, battery-powered electronics, sensor calibration, and mechanical/electronics integration. Deliverables can include: * System architecture * Satellite microphone PCB design * Main board schematic/layout * STM32 firmware structure * ESP32 TDOA solver logic * WiFi/LoRa communication flow * Power management design * Calibration/validation plan * Documentation and test procedure Because this is a complex hardware + firmware + mechanical system, I recommend starting with a prototype phase first, then moving to full validation after the core detection and timing accuracy are confirmed.
