I need two simple yet reliable prototype nodes that can sit outdoors, wake up at a configurable interval, pull a register line from a Modbus-compatible soil probe, and push that reading through a Meshtastic link. No commercial polish required—the goal is to prove the data path end-to-end. Scope of work • Recommend and source—or at least specify—a compact board, radio module, and battery pack (AA-powered) suited for outdoor use. I currently have no hardware on hand, so component guidance is essential. • Write Python-based firmware (preferred language) that: – Powers the Modbus interface, retrieves the probe value, and sleeps between cycles to conserve the batteries. – Publishes the reading over Meshtastic in a lightweight JSON or CSV payload. • Use the Official Meshtastic CLI + Bash + Simple Script (Minimal Python) for my laptop to listen to a connected Meshtastic node, parse incoming packets, and insert each reading into an existing MySQL table with a timestamp. Success criteria • Both field nodes run for at least several days on fresh AAs while sending test readings every 15 minutes. • The receiver script reliably captures and stores those readings in MySQL without manual intervention. • All code, wiring diagrams, and a concise bill of materials are handed over so I can reproduce or iterate on the build. Speed matters more than aesthetics; if it works, I’m happy.

Hi, This is Elias from Miami. I checked the details and understand you need two outdoor prototype nodes that read a Modbus soil probe at intervals, transmit readings over Meshtastic, and store received data into MySQL from a laptop listener script. The real challenge here is keeping the prototype simple while managing power use, outdoor reliability, Modbus wiring, Meshtastic payload format, and unattended receiver logging. I've worked on IoT-style prototypes involving sensor reading, Python scripts, low-power workflows, MySQL logging, hardware integration, and field data pipelines. I’d approach this by first recommending the board, Meshtastic radio, RS485/Modbus interface, battery pack, and wiring plan, then building the node firmware and receiver script using Meshtastic CLI/Bash with minimal Python for parsing and MySQL insert. Q1 – What Modbus soil probe model are you planning to use? Q2 – Do the field nodes need true Python firmware, or is MicroPython/CircuitPython acceptable? Q3 – Will the laptop receiver have one Meshtastic node connected by USB full time? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi I am an embedded systems engineer with over 16 years of experience. I have worked on low-power outdoor telemetry nodes, Modbus/RS485 sensors, LoRa/Meshtastic style links, battery sleep cycles, and small receiver scripts that push field data into SQL systems. For this prototype I would keep the design practical and reproducible: first select readily available compact boards, radio/node option, RS485/Modbus interface parts, AA battery pack and outdoor enclosure approach; then build the node firmware to wake, power the probe, read the required register, format a small JSON/CSV payload and send it through Meshtastic. On the laptop side I can provide the Official Meshtastic CLI/Bash/minimal Python listener that parses packets and inserts timestamped readings into your existing MySQL table. I will hand over the code, wiring diagrams, concise BOM and setup notes so you can rebuild or iterate on it. A few details I would confirm before starting are the exact soil probe model/register map, MySQL table schema, expected range between nodes, and whether parts are to be ordered locally in Sweden or specified only for your purchase. Please contact me to discuss details.

Hi, okay as far as I understand we have to build a modbus -> meshtastic -> receiver -> laptop pipeline. For that we have to build a gateway, which will connect and translate modbus to JSON or CSV or MQTT, and then we need another gateway that takes the information and feeds the server or whatever interface you have for storing the data. After finishing the project you will receive: 1. Gateway specifications and firmware. Also, I will help with further installations and burning the firmware. 2. A script that translates modbus to json and makes commands available (sleep, wake up etc) 3. A script which will receive the information, parse it, and insert it into a database 4. A database schema and setup instructions (if needed) To find a common ground please answer the questions below: 1. Can you provide the modbus and messages specifications? Is it a standard RS-485 interface RTU? 2. What type of enclosure should we supply? What IP rating should it have? 3. Do we have a DB schema? 4. What are the specifications for the meshtastic nodes? 5. Do you require hardened security (encryption, MQTT with TLS etc.) Please ignore the project delivery time and bid amount. They will be estimated after the information is provided. I’m happy to discuss the details over chat, and I will respond promptly. Thanks for your attention, Archil

Hi, I can design and deliver your end-to-end proof-of-concept for outdoor Modbus → Meshtastic soil sensing nodes. I will build two low-power field prototypes using ESP32 + LoRa (Meshtastic-compatible) hardware with RS485 Modbus soil probes and AA battery power optimized for deep-sleep operation. Each node will periodically wake (configurable interval), read the Modbus register, format a lightweight JSON payload, and transmit it over Meshtastic. On the receiver side, I will provide a simple and robust laptop-based pipeline using the official Meshtastic CLI + a minimal Python listener script that parses incoming packets and reliably inserts readings into your MySQL database with timestamps. Deliverables include: • Hardware BOM with exact, easy-to-source components (nodes, RS485 module, power system, enclosure guidance) • Wiring diagram and power design for outdoor AA operation • Node firmware (PlatformIO/Arduino, low-power optimized) • Meshtastic receiver + Python → MySQL ingestion script • Setup instructions for full end-to-end replication Focus is on speed, reliability, and a working data path—not over-engineering. The goal will be fully validated end-to-end sensor → mesh → database flow with multi-day battery operation. Happy to start immediately.

Hi there, Outdoor Meshtastic soil sensor prototypes need reliable wake/sleep behavior, not polish. I’ve spent the last 4 years solving exactly this type of low-power sensor-to-radio path, including battery-operated field nodes and simple laptop ingestion pipelines. The real risk here is power budgeting and timing drift: the Modbus probe, radio transmit, and sleep cycle have to be coordinated so the AAs last for days, not hours. I’ll validate the hardware choice first, then build firmware that powers the probe only when needed, reads the register, formats a minimal JSON/CSV payload, and sends it over Meshtastic. On the laptop side, I’ll use the official CLI with a small Bash/Python listener to parse packets and insert them into MySQL with timestamps. I’ll deliver a concise BOM, wiring notes, firmware, and the receiver script in a reproducible structure so you can clone the build or swap parts later. Best regards, John allen.

I understand you need two prototype Meshtastic nodes for outdoor soil sensing, capable of waking, reading Modbus soil probes, and transmitting data. I recently delivered a similar end-to-end data path solution for a remote environmental monitoring project, successfully transmitting sensor readings over a low-power radio network. My approach will involve selecting an ESP32 board with an integrated LoRa module (like the TTGO T-Beam) for its Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and radio capabilities, paired with a suitable AA battery holder. The firmware will be written in MicroPython to manage the deep sleep cycles, interface with the soil probe via its Modbus RTU protocol using a UART adapter, and then broadcast the readings over the Meshtastic network. The final output will be two functional nodes, each capable of performing the described sensing and transmission loop. What is the expected physical environment for these outdoor prototypes, specifically regarding temperature extremes and potential moisture exposure? Ready to start as soon as you confirm scope.
