Enclosure/sample chamber design for optical system

We have an optical/laser based system that requires an enclosure which provides access to a sample chamber. Our previous design used sheet metal to do this, but ended up looking like a big box and was not very attractive to customers. I've attached pictures of the previous enclosure as an example of what we *don't* want.

The enclosure will support a 24"x18" optical breadboard, shown at:

that has a large number of optics mounted to it. The weight of the breadboad+optics is 50lbs maximum. Here are the features the enclosure will need to have:

+ Approx exterior dimensions: 25"x19"x10" (LxWxH)

+ Integrated handles on both long sides of the enclosure, capable of supporting 100lbs

+ Two 2" circular aperatures in the front of the device, separation and spacing to be given when contract awarded

+ one 0.25" circular aperature in the back of the device

+ square port for pass through of cables from inside the box

+ a hole in the back for a gas input fitting (approx 0.25")

+ enclosure should open from the top, with the top coming off entirely (no hinges), with the lid sealing against a gasket on the bottom part of the box when attached

+ top should have a hinged door roughly 3"x3" which seals against a sample chamber (which will also be part of the design bid) when closed. (Note, the interior of the box is not going to be under pressure, so that reduces the strength of the seal requirements).

+ Lid should be easy to remove

+ Should be easy to manufacture, sturdy design, with contours, decoration that would be consistent with a powerful optical instrument. You can use devices such as the following for guidance:

As part of the design you will have to consider what material to make this from. We do not have a requirement that it be made out of aluminum, but the case needs to be as light as possible while still being rigid. We are open to designs that use plastics as well as metal, the prime concern is the cost in making the design. The design priorities are: Function/sturdiness, cost, attractive design.

In addition, we want the sample chamber that the top lid mates with to be designed as well. The sample chamber should be no larger than 3"x3"x7", and has the following requirements:

+ 2" optical ports in the front and back side of the chamber

+when the access hatch is open. the chamber should seal to prevent gas exchange from the interior of the instrument into the chamber and vice versa.

+ removable from the system, if the user chooses not to use it (the access hatch will always be there, we just want the sample chamber walls and such to come out, in case the client has other ideas what to do with that space)

The design of the enclosure should be done in Solidworks (other programs should be cleared with us first), with the deliverables being:

1.) The Soildworks file(s) for the design, specifying dimensions and all other needed requirements for manufacturing, including showing how the parts fit together

2.) Any instructions/notes on how to have the parts built, and an estimate of the cost

We have new products in development now that will have similar work, so we wish to find a company that can do this sort of design work for us in the future.
