Hi Christopher B., I recently completed a very similar project. I can show u sample. Questions: 1) What is the exact AVR part number and the available programming interface on your board (6-pin ISP/SPI, 10-pin JTAG, PDI, UPDI/TPI)? Also, what’s the target VCC and can you isolate the target from the rest of the circuit during programming? 2) Are you extracting from an in-circuit device? Do you know the current fuse/lock-bit state (LB/BLB, BOOTRST/BOOTSZ, CKDIV8, clock source)? Do you need EEPROM and bootloader preserved along with application flash? Suggestions: 1) Map tool support before touching hardware: J-Link does not natively support most 8‑bit AVR (ISP/UPDI/TPI). If it’s classic ATmega/ATtiny, use Atmel‑ICE (with avrdude or Microchip Studio) or Segger Flasher AVR. If it’s XMEGA with JTAG/PDI, check Segger’s device list; only proceed with J-Link if your exact part/interface is supported. 2) Create a complete, verifiable backup set before any write: read and save flash, EEPROM, fuses, and lock bits; verify device signature and voltage. Confirm clock fuses match available clock (internal vs external) to avoid bricking; if external is set but absent, supply a temporary clock. Keep an HV programmer/rescue plan ready for fuse recovery.
