The goal of the project is to create a methodology for flood risk assessment that can be applied to different parts of the world.
The methodology developed will help in making decisions for areas concerning human migration and to be more prepared when a flood occurs.
Floods are one of the most common type of natural hazards in the world. It can cause major damage to the quality of life and huge losses. A methodology will be developed to conduct and perform flood risk assessment using remote sensing; GIS analysis; hydrogeology; and QGIS.
A standard operating procedure (SOP) representing a set of steps and instructions compiled to help carry out routine operations using QGIS. A general flood assessment should perform several damage assessments for events with different probabilities considering structural and non-structural mitigation measures. Generally, flood risk analysis models start with an assessment of the flood hazard, which specifies the probability and intensity of a possible event. Once the hazard information is defined, it can be overlaid with socio-economic information, such as land use data, building datasets, information on population, proximity to urban and rural areas as well as road data etc. Doing so gives an indication of what is exposed to flooding and what the possible impact will be.
The main objective is to develop a working methodology for flood risk assessment, there are several ways that risk assessment can be carried out, the steps demonstrated are…
• Retrieve aerial data for the study area
• Visualize data in the right projection
• Create a hill shade of the original DEM
• Create catchment basin for the study area
• Create a flood probility map for the study area.
The plugin- ‘FloodRisk’ was downloaded, along with the plugin- ‘CrayFish’ in QGIS. The FloodRisk plugin provides the assessment of flood consequences, in terms of loss of life and direct economic damages. The proposed cost assessment tool aims to be used for decision support systems and policy development of risk management. The Crayfish plugin aspires to be a time explorer for various grid and vector datasets within QGIS
