That check is worth doing per page, not once at the end. A single number read with a misplaced decimal — 1.234 where the source means 1,234 — leaves the column looking entirely normal, and only the page subtotal disagrees. Reconciling page by page tells you exactly where the discrepancy is instead of hunting through the whole file. The formatting rules you mention are where silent damage happens too. A spreadsheet will helpfully strip a leading zero, turn a value with a currency symbol into text so it stops summing, and read 1.500 as one and a half in one locale and fifteen hundred in another.
