I need you to write an academic article. Compare and contrast Hawthorne’s mentions and depictions of witchcraft and Satanic influence and activity in The Scarlet Letter and “Young Goodman Brown.” Research Puritan beliefs regarding witchcraft and the evil capabilities of Satan to make an argument about how realistic or fantastical Hawthorne’s witches and devils really are.
You may choose certain scenes or dialogue to focus on from both stories, but in analyzing Hawthorne’s use of these evil occurrences, answer the following questions: Does Hawthorne intend his audience to interpret these evil characters and activities as literal or symbolic? How willing would his original Puritan audiences have been to believe Hawthorne’s evil accounts? Also, what sins do Hawthorne’s characters commit that leads them into the clutches of the Devil and what becomes of these characters after their evil encounters? Which sins were considered to be the vilest of offenses to the Puritans, and what did the Puritans believe would allow someone to be influenced or even possessed by Satan?
In writing this essay, be sure to give equal consideration to both stories. Also, use David Levin’s “Shadows of Doubt: Specter Evidence in Hawthorne’s ‘Young Goodman Brown’” (Pages 693-700) as one of your four secondary sources (minimum).
Needs to be 6-7 pages and done in the next 24 hours.
