During a storage cleanup, some four-year-old uploads that our Media Grid relies on went missing. Instead of masking it with a generic fallback, we’re doing it the right way: manually finding or capturing a fresh thumbnail for each affected post, uploading it to our WordPress Media Library, and saving it as the featured image so the grid (and SEO) are truly fixed—permanently. The Work (about 100 posts) Identify each post with a broken featured image (404). Locate the best available source image (Wayback, original assets, or a relevant frame/screen capture). Capture/crop to our grid’s aspect ratio (square by default; we’ll confirm), optimize, and upload to WP Media Library. Set as the post’s featured image, add clean alt text, and save. Verify the grid tile renders normally and the single post looks great on desktop and mobile. Log each fix in a simple tracker (URL, new attachment ID, alt text, notes). Why Manual Beats a Placeholder Real fix, not a band-aid: The grid reads real images again (no fragile rewrites or plugin filters). Better UX & CTR: Intentional visuals beat a one-size-fits-all graphic. SEO signals restored: Proper attachment metadata, alt text, and thumbnails help long-term. Upgrade-safe: Nothing to maintain after we’re done. Deliverables 100 refreshed featured images attached to their posts. Consistent, on-brand crops (e.g., 1:1) and optimized file sizes. Clean alt text for accessibility/SEO. A progress sheet with: Post URL → Status, Source used, File name, Attachment ID, Alt text, QA check. What You’ll Need to Be Good At WordPress + Media Library fundamentals (setting featured images, attachment metadata). Keen eye for framing/cropping; light image edits (capture, crop, compress). Practical tooling (any of: system screenshot tools, Photoshop/Figma/Canva, Squoosh/ImageOptim, Wayback). Diligent record-keeping and QA. Our Specs (we’ll confirm on kickoff) Aspect ratio: Match current grid (likely 1:1). Target size: ~1200–1600 px on the long edge; keep files lean. Format: WebP preferred, JPG fallback when needed. Naming: [login to view URL] (readable, consistent). How We’ll QA No 404s on grid thumbnails or featured images. Visual check on grid and individual posts (desktop + mobile). Spot-checks for alt text, file size, and crispness. Cache purge where applicable. If you’re the type who takes pride in methodical, hands-on fixes—and you appreciate how much a great thumbnail can do for UX and credibility—let’s talk. Send a brief note with: 2–3 examples of before/after thumbnail or image cleanup you’ve done, Your preferred workflow/tools, Your expected throughput and availability. This is elbow grease by design. When we’re done, it’ll stay fixed.
