C# program to replace control variable in EnergyPlus simulation

The task:

Background: I’m building a HVAC-control algorithm to optimize energy consumption in buildings. To test this I need a good test environment. EnergyPlus is an open source tool that can simulate climate and energy consumption of building based on material, ventilation, control algorithm etc across time. I will build my algorithm in C# as this later will be a part of a larger C# software suite.

Your task:

Create a solution that can run a EnergyPlus simulation of [login to view URL] (included in EnergyPlus installation along with [login to view URL] as weather file) and for each timestep make all variables (~60 variables) available to a c# function that can return modified control values to Energy plus for the next input step.

There are some open source tools that can be used to solve this. Either to reuse the tools in whole, change the code or just to understand how this could be solved.

Building Controls Virtual Test Bed (Open source software to link EnergyPlus with other programs, java)

Description of setup needed to connect EnergyPlus to BCVTB ([login to view URL])

Ptolemy II (Open source software that though BCVTB can run simulations in EnergyPlus and exchange data, written in Java, [login to view URL])

There is even an BCVTB-example, where data is feed to a external program that returns a new control signal. (does however not look like a good solution to handle many input variables).

Proposed solutions:

1. Simplest solution is likely to follow the above guides and use Ptolomy as master for the simulation. Eg. Potolomy starts the EnergyPlus simulation and uses BCVTB to for each simulation/time step get data from EP each simulation step, then passes it to a C# program, that then returns controls signals to Ptolomy, that returns them to BCVTP to EnergyPlus. There are guides for all parts of this and what needs to be solved to handle the large amount of inputs signals.

2. Write a more extensive c# program that interfaces either EnergyPlus or BCVTP directly, to both run the simulation in EnergyPlus and directly read the data and return to new control signals.

Feel free to propose other solutions as well.

Milestone 0 (only available for experienced accounts): 10%

Exit criteria: Technical solution provided and agreed upon

Milestone 1 (available for everyone): 40%

Exit criteria: Successful demonstration of one value read from EnergyPlus by the written C# program, based on the agreed technical solution

Milestone 2 (available for everyone): Remaining % eg 100%

Exit criteria:

Demonstration, walkthrough and delivery of solution that for each timestep in a simulation reads all variables to a C# function and returns modified control signals to EnergyPlus. EnergyPlus should still provide its own output files for variables (See attached documents)
