Patch Management
Overview of the work
We are looking for microsoft patch management solution for our network. Preferably solution should mirror and download updates/fixes/service packs from Microsoft site on local server and enables administrators to manage the distribution of update released for microsoft products to computers environment in control manner. The program develop should able to integrated with samba 4.5 directory service for access and installation rights to other systems in network. The solution would reduce internet bandwidth, save time and provide administrative control & monitoring on status of various window client updates for audit purpose.
Detailed explanation
We have about 200 approx windows clients (Windows 7,8 and 10 both professional and home edition) that are joined to samba 4.5 Active directory. Currently each window clients connects directly to Microsoft update servers to download and install updates/fixes/service packs resulting in high internet bandwidth usage and time consumed. We need solution to reduce this internet bandwidth usage by using centralized update server on intranet to update our network windows clients.
There are various commercial solution available like
1> Microsoft WSUS server
2> Manage Engine Desktop Central
3> Nitrobit (Now obsolete and no development taking place)
We want opensource solution for same.
One possible Solution is Cache Server. For eg for Ubuntu clients workstation, we are using opensource Apt-Cacher-NG program (https://www.tecmint.com/apt-cache-server-in-ubuntu/ ) which caches all the downloaded packages from the internet on the apt-cache server and the rest of the Debian, Ubuntu machines get them from Apt-Cache, this will save precious time and internet bandwidth too.
On similar lines, if we have one windows cache server (Linux based or Window 10 based) that caches all windows updates/hotfix and some program install on window clients that check and install update from that window cache server.
There are other possible solutions or opensource program that can satisfy the requirement for centralized management of window update solution. Those solutions are welcome but it should fulfill following criteria
1> Window Cache Server that caches all updates/hostfix/upgrade so internet usage is reduced
2> Windows Client side program that allow connect with window cache server to check and update its OS
3> Window Cache Server or Client side program should be able to satisfy pre- and post-requirement of patch/hotfix so it can successfully deployed and installed on windows clients ( This requirement exclude window deployment tools that can deploy standalone apps).
4> Integrate with samba 4.5 for access and permission control.
5> Should provide centralized panel for monitoring and control updates process for all windows clients.
6> All installation of patches/hotfix to network windows client in controlled manner.
Deliverables
Window Cache Server
Window client program that check and update from that Cache Server
