Job Description:
At Pinwheel, we want to build natural language processing (NLP) models that can detect potentially concerning situations or encounters (such as violence, bullying, and suicidal ideation) from a large corpus of text messages. The goal is to proactively notify parents of these incidents and allow them to take remedial action in a timely
manner. We are currently building an MVP model focusing on violence, but we want to improve the performance of this model and extend it to other situations (such as bullying and suicidal ideation). There are several challenges involved in this project, including the variability of language, the multi- author nature of the text message data, and the need to deal with class imbalance in the data. The practicum students will work on addressing these challenges and developing effective NLP models for detecting potentially concerning situations in text messages.
