Need help decompiling and recompiling an APK

I am seeking help with an apk file that I need to make changes to. I DON'T need any changes made, so I'm hoping this is just an easy task for someone to help me with. I just need help with reversing engineering an APK file. So in other words, decompiling it and then recompiling it with no changes.

I've been trying this myself for quite some time on a particular file but it doesn't seem to be working for me and I don't know what I'm missing. It should be easy for someone who has been in android development.

I'm tried using apktools however it's not working for me. After I recompile and install, the app loads up a blank black screen and nothing happens. I've also adventured into dex2jar and jdgui and tried getting the original java source and imported into eclipse but was unsuccessful.. Although this may be due to my lack of experience in using eclipse and android development.
