**Overall aim: To develop an iPhone App that diagnose whether auditory noise enhances cognitive performance or not and apply sufficient amount of noise if needed.

Background: Research from our group shows that people with low attention perform better in cognitive and memory tasks if they are in an environment of loud background noise. People with normal and high attention perform worse when exposed to noise. The aim of this application is to assess 1) if a certain individual perform better in noisy environment, or not, and 2) if yes, at what noise level this particular individual perform at his/her best. Given that they perform better noise should be applied.

Attention levels and noise levels are made in two formats; self-rating of attention and cognitive tests.**

## Deliverables

**"Noise cognitive enhancer" App

Overall aim: To develop an iPhone App that diagnose whether auditory noise enhances cognitive performance or not and apply sufficient amount of noise if needed.

Attention levels and noise levels are made in two formats; self-rating of attention and cognitive tests.

REQUIREMENTS OF DEVELOPER

The developer should;

- Be able to communicate in English over Skype with us for fine tuning of the specification of the App

- Work efficiently and independently in developing the App

- Be interested in further development of the App following the specification made here.

- Be able to produce a simple and user-friendly layout and "nice" design of the App

APP SPECIFICATION

Here we list the functions that the App should have, where each number corresponds to a certain "page/menu" in the App:

1. Tests. The user are able to take up three cognitive tests (performance test 1-3), that are presented either with noise (through headphones), or without noise. And a self-rating test (presented without noise).

1.1. Self-rating test of attention. The user will answer approximately 6 questions in a scale. The questions are specified in the appendix A (in two versions). The scores need to be summed and stored. The score needs to be transformed to verbal lave (e.g., "you are likely/not likely to benefit from noise").

1.2.1. Performance test 1. Word recognition test. 25 words are presented on the screen for 2 seconds each. The words are drawn randomly from a larger word pool consisting of 2000 words provided by us, so that use will have different words each time he/she takes this test. The presentation of the word list is immediately followed by a recognition test, where two words are presented on the screen. One of the words is from the previously presented list and the other is drawn from randomly from the word pool. There are 25 such word pairs so that all words in the list are tested. The program the two words, whether the response is correct, and the reaction time for each response. It also calculates the mean percentage correct and the mean and standard deviation of the reaction time. All results are saved on a server to be used when deciding noise and noise level.

1.2.2. Performance test 2. AX-CPT test. One of two possible objects is shown on the screen, i.e., a red or a blue triangle. The user is first instructed to press as fast and as accurate as possible on the red triangle, but ignore the blue one (do not press). There is a delay between the each object (75 % correct, press and 25% false, not press). The App stores the type of object, the response, and the response time. It also calculates the percentage correct response and the mean and standard deviation of the response time for correct/incorrect blue/red responses.

1.2.3. Performance test 3. A span board test. 16 identical objects are shown on the screen (four rows, four columns). On object is changed[GS2] for a short time (i.e., to a new color), followed by a short delay. This is repeated for 1 to 5 times, starting with 1 and repeated twice, and then increasing to 2, 3, etc. It stops when the user fail twice on a level. The user is asked to press on the object in the same order as they appeared. The number of correct responses and response times are stored.

3. Help. The user will be provided with a short test outlining the purpose of the App.

4. Will noise help me. The user will get feedback on whether he/she benefit or not from noise (80 dB white noise pre-recorded from an MP3 file), and, or whether they need to take more test. They do not have to get feedback on their individual scores, rather the feedback will be shown as text labels, e.g., "you are likely/not likely to benefit from noise". "you need to take more test for us to know if you benefit from noise". We will provide cut-of scores to make this decision (algoritm) based on test results and self rating score. Given a subject is performs statistically better during noise conditions, compared to no noise (or the opposite), the subject will be informed of this. The App should then move into a mood where it aims to identify which noise levels (dB) a user performs the best on, and will randomly present either noise with a volym of 70, 80, or 90 dB during the tests (1.2.1-3).

5. My Noise. This is the application part of the App, where noise is given to the user. The user has the following alternatives:

- Play noise until the user stops it.

- Play noise for pre-defined time period (e.g., 10 min), followed by a break (e.g., 2 min). The play/break times will be suggested by the App based on the SNAP scores, age, and task difficulty (chosen by the subject, easy, medium, hard). The exact formula for this specification will be provided later.

It is important that the noise volym is correct (80 dB). Therefore we would like to override the volym adjustment of the iPhone (so that the user cannot control this).

6 Main menu. The main menu is a link between the previously listed procedures. In particular it should have the following links;

- Tests

- Help

- Will noise help me

- My Noise

It should also provide an immediate feedback of whether noise help or not. If the user has not done sufficient many tests it should display; "Take tests to find out if noise will help you!".

7 Login. The user should be able to login as user (email-address) with a password. The login is required to access the result pages.

8 User feedback of the app. Following a certain number of usage of the noise (e.g. every 10 time that the noise is used) the user should be asked how well the App works on a scale from 0 to 10, as well as a small number (5-10) of additional questions (at this time unspecified).

Additional requirements:

9. Uploading data. The App should be able to upload user-generated data to a server. The App should log how much time the user is using the noise in the App, i.e., the start and stop time of noise onset/offset.

Appendix A. Self-rating test of attention:

These question (in Swedish) will be provided to the user.
