This is a routing/latency problem I've tackled before with similar setups - US-hosted server, remote user in Asia, painful RDP lag. For your case, I'd look at Azure Virtual Desktop first since it keeps compute close to the data and only sends display pixels across the wire, which cuts perceived latency significantly. Combined with an Azure VPN Gateway (or ExpressRoute if you want predictable jitter), the drive mapping requirement stays totally transparent to your thick-client app. The key thing is picking the right Azure region and configuring WAN optimization settings properly - this is where most people get it wrong and still end up with lag even after migrating. I've done this for clients connecting from South Asia to US-based servers and the difference is dramatic. I can put together an architecture recommendation with two or three options at different cost points, then implement whichever you choose.
