220841 Text File Parser / Reformater

Background / Requirements:

This requirement is for an “engine” that can import a text (input) file and parse it to provide an output text file. The preference is for an MS Access, MS Excel, MS Visual Basic application/engine. However all suggestions will be welcome.

The parsing process includes but is not limited to the following.

a. Changing the delimiter.

b. Changing other punctuation characters.

c. Combining/concatenating the contents of certain columns.

d. Introduction of a separator for combined/concatenated columns.

e. Removing certain columns.

Characteristics of the “Input Text File”

The ‘Input Text File” has the following characteristics.

1. The file is approximately 1.50 MB large.

2. The file has 18 columns.

3 The file has approximately 9000 rows.

4. The delimiter in the file is the semi colon “;”.

5. Other punctuation characters in the file are the comma, the period the hyphen.

The structure of the file can be seen below.

The workflow would be for the “engine” to import the “Input Text File”, parse it and provide a file with the following characteristics.

Characteristics of the “Output Text File”

The ‘Output Text File” has the following characteristics.

1. The file shall be no more than 2.50 MB large.

2. The file shall have no more than 18 columns.

3. The file shall have no more than 9000 rows.

4. The delimiter in the file shall be a pipe “|”.

The structure of the file can be seen below.

1. The columns/fields in red shall be removed.

2. The columns/fields in green shall not be removed.

3. But their contents shall be combined to overwrite column number 15 (Office).

4. There shall be a separator between the two data strings that will be written to column/field number 15 (office).

5. That separator shall be the ”Greater Than” character “>”.

6. There shall be no spaces between the separator and the data from both columns.
