Application must track split tested conversions to a site using PHP/MySQL and javascript.

The landing page and thankyou page can be on a different domain from the application.

Implementation: site owner opens application, written in PHP, and has two text areas to enter HTML code. (The split tests will involve just one factor with just two alternatives). The contents of the two textareas will be rotated on the page, for split testing.

Data from text areas are stored in mysql database.

Site owner is presented with javascript code snippets to paste back into their landing page and thankyou page.

There is a javascript code snippet on the landing page that calls a php file on the split testing application server. The php file will query the database to determine which version to run on the landing page (based on a counter -- ok to just alternate versions every-other), and will log the visitor's ip address, referral string, and which version of the html code was run for that visitor.

The php file will also deliver to the landing page the appropriate content to be displayed by the other javascript snippet.

Return visitors should be logged as a repeat visitor, and should be shown the same version of the page they saw on the first visit.

Javascript on thankyou page will see if the visitor is already being tracked from landing page, and will register a conversion event for the appropriate visitor when this is the case. Matching the visitor from landing page to thankyou page will be accomplished by some method (ip address or some form of cookie -- see final paragraph).

When answering, please discuss the merits of various methods of tracking among the following: via ip address, via session cookie, via persistent 1st party cookie. We are especially interested to determine if tracking via 1st party cookie is feasible when the landing page is on a different domain from where the tracking software resides.
