Simple site search (Unicode Support)

Need a fairly simple site search for a small website (about 25 pages).
I have already succesfully installed a very nice script which indexes the site and retrieves results very quickly from flat text files (no database required). The problem is the site is now translated into 5 languages English, French, German, Chinese and Japanese. The script (php) does not seem to be able to handle unicode which I am using to display all the different languages. So I need someone to help me with either adding unicode support to the the script or coming up with another solution. Looking for someone with unicode experience especially searching in Chinese and Japanese characters.
