The development of a rule processing system for a firewall type application with a graphical user interface. This graphical user interface and backend processor must be able to be added in to an existing Visual Basic 6.0 Application with ease. The interface: The interface allows a user to create a hierarchical rule set such as those found in common firewall products. Rules are read from the top and outweigh subsequent rules. New rules can be added at any point in the hierarchy and rules can be removed from any point. When a rule is added, all spots are blank requiring a user to right-click each section (such as IP Address, From User, To User, etc) to add or remove the components for that section. For example a right click in IP Address should bring up a pop-up menu allowing a user to add or remove an IP address. The interface resembles a table see the attached document for more information. From IP ??" This section allows a person to specify a single ip address, multiple ip addresses, or an ip address range. From User ??" This section allows a person to specify one user, many users, or a group of users. To User - This section allows a person to specify one user, many users, or a group of users. Action ??" this section allows a user to specify either permit or deny. Returns Permit or Deny Hours ??" this section allows a user to specify what time of the day during which days of the weak the action occurs. This can include different hours on multiple days . Encryption ??" this section allows a user to specify which encryption type to use or to use NO encryption. Returns Des, 3Des, 3Des-112, or None Log ??" this section allows a user to specify whether or not to Log the entry ( returns true or false) There must be a function which returns the status of a rule parse. For example, the main program will send an IP address, From User, To User, and Day/Time to the function and the function will return the proper Action , Encryption, and Log settings. Rules are parsed from top to bottom, rules on the top take priority over rules on the bottom, in the above sample interface, communication between Joe and Sam is permitted even though the last line forbids it since the first rule outweighs it. The rule processing agent must be extremely quick and have the ability to load and save the rulesets created.
