First, if this post is inappropriate, I apologise up front, in advance. The Admin is free to remove it without any ill feelings on my part, or if someone objects please just PM me - with your reason/s - and if the reason/s is/are not frivolous it will be gone.
I'd like a quote only at this point in time. The quote is expected to be firm, so please do not quote low to get the job and then expect to start racking up additional charges for time, features, etc. I am not the end customer, so I don't want to be embarrassed because you may want to play money games...
I do modify and install my own phpBB2/3 Forums - all for free use by my users - but I have been approached by someone who wants a commercial internet application and I wondered if anyone here might be interested in creating a MOD for phpBB3 to perform the functions... for a quoted fee, of course.
The client is a close friend of someone who is genuinely disabled and is having a hard time making ends meet, but apparently has a gift of prediction - and is good enough they could make a living at it. The phpBB3 MOD would provide paid access to his latest predictions on a specific range of subjects and/or to specific predictions as needed - sold only as entertainment, like all the other predictions, I have to assume.
Just so we are clear on the most important aspect, I have been assured by my client that this is now / will be legal to offer here in Canada. In any case, if any hint of illegality arises I would pull the install down myself.
The MOD should access credit card payment through PayPal and then grant access - limited to the usual periods, day/week/month/year, which I assume could be specified in days - and then terminate access / permissions to the specific prediction at the end of the period.
I would be maintaining it (I maintain all my other forums on a daily basis anyway) and the predictor would be inserting the predictions on schedule and on request, so I guess the traditional Administrator and Moderator functions respectively would cover that angle. But I know there is going to be something more than just setting up a phpBB3 Forum and publishing a PayPal address. I would like the info gathering - payment - permissions aspect to be as automated as possible.
I also have a full time job (on 24-hour rotating shifts), so this should require as little maintenance as possible. I can handle the maintenance, web design, graphics and forum appearance modification, as well as adding any categories the predictor wants to add and updating the web pages.
In my 10 years experience with them the provider I use is rock solid - UNIX/Apache/FreeBSD based with PHP5, Perl, Python, C, C++, Tcl, Level 1 & 2 System CGI, Cron (up to once per hour) and SSL available.
Here are my thoughts so far... feel free to ask questions, make comments and suggestions, and to contact me (PM or email, please!!) with same and/or a quote (for both fee and time frame).
The opening web page would outline what is available, and then provide a link to the Forum's application form.
The form would let the user select which predictions they want to see and for what period, accept the payment, provide a username and password (which could have been gathered in the form) to the stated email address, and then open access under the limited permissions for the specified period. If there is a specific desired prediction, there should be a way for the client to communicate that to the predictor.
The database table additions would keep track of all the transaction details (including PayPal authorizations and current balances) as well as permit the Admin (= myself) and Moderator (= the predictor) to both add and modify the predictions, and these could be viewed by the Admin and Moderator for daily, weekly, monthly and annual periods.
A Board on the Forum might be public, of course, to allow the predictor to chat with customers and the customers to chat with each other (but is that really a good idea?? <smile>)
I will meet with the client to get the rest of the details, but he is not at all computer literate - so I am outlining the needs I see so far, and if possible I'd like to to arrive there with a very loose ball-park figure for the work *** as well as how long it would take to create ***
Standing by... and thank you in advance for your time and thoughts.
All the best...
