We need a designer/flash animator urgently to work on this project, as we've been let down at the last minute. The project, Caring for the Forest, is an interactive educational resource for primary school children about the need for reforestation in Cambodia, and needs to be completed BY THE END OF SEPTEMBER. It consists of a number of "click through" Flash frames, plus a central game, which could be based either on a maze or a "whack the mole" concept. If you are interested in working on this project, please send estimated costs and timeline for the job, plus, details of your portfolio as soon as possible. Thanks - Chris Winchester, web projects manager, CAFOD online communications team DETAILED BRIEF FOLLOWS: Project Title: Caring for the Forest ------------- Purpose: ------- To produce an animated, interactive resource to enable pupils to understand the importance of reforestation, to evaluate the benefits that the forest brings to a rural community and to learn how shared responsibility for its nurture benefits the whole community. Audience: -------- 1. Key Stage 2 (ages 7-11) both in school and at home, boys and girls) 2. Teachers in Catholic primary schools using the resource on a whiteboard or in a computer suite with their class during geography, citizenship or RE lessons. - will be used by teachers still using Fairground Issue 21 (from which the PDF I sent comes) - will also be used by teachers receiving a forthcoming CAFOD Fairground magazine, in Autumn '06, contrasting urban and rural environments in Peru. Required transformation: ----------------------- Pupils should move from "I don't know what caring for a forest in Cambodia involves" to "I understand something of what caring for a forest in Cambodia involves and why it is important." Key messages: ------------ 1) Forests are important. 2) They bring benefits to the community. 3) People can improve the environment or damage it, and decisions about places and environments affect the future quality of people's lives. 4) People make seek to manage environments sustainably, and we all share a responsibility to work together to care for the environment. Success criteria: ---------------- + More visits to schools web pages for this resource. + More visits to schools web pages. + Stories of change from teachers and pupils sent to CAFOD Schools team. Tone, style, sensitivities: -------------------------- + Clear and informative, easy to use. + Fun to use! + Visual - bright and colourful. + Quick to download. + Will reflect CAFOD's Vision, Mission and Values (see [login to view URL]) + Will not endanger CAFOD partners + Will be in line with child protection policy and use simple and appropriate language. CAFOD and Cambodia ------------------ For background on CAFOD visit: [login to view URL] For information on CAFOD's work in Cambodia see: [login to view URL] Additional reference sites: --------------- A maze game with ideas that could possibly be adapted is at: [login to view URL] Background information about protection of forests can be seen at: [login to view URL] [login to view URL] Description of contents: ----------------------- The game will centre on Sok Chaun whose father (Sau Sae) and mother (Sum Yum) work in a reforestation nursey in Cambodia growing seedlings. Sok Chaun will travel through the forest planting seedlings. Pop-up text boxes will explain how this benefits the forest and the people of Sok Chaun's village. The forest will be depicted as a maze through which players must guide Sok Chaun from the nursery home to his village. Specifications: -------------- Page 1: ------ Photo of Sok Chaun, turns into an animated character: [Text] Hello! My name is Sok Chaun. I live in Cambodia, in the village of Trarpang Plong. Can you find Cambodia on the map? Button: Next > Page 2: ------ Map of World> Map of Asia> Clicking on Cambodia gives a text box saying "Well done"; clicking elsewhere gives a text box saying "Try again" Button: Next > Page 3: ------ Animated Sok Chaun. [Text in speech bubble] The forest is very important to my village. There was a war in my country that ended before I was born. [New speech bubble] Many trees were destroyed by bombs and many people were driven from their homes. [New speech bubble] They chopped down more trees to sell for food and to build houses. So the forest began to die. Page 4: ------ Now CAFOD is helping us to care for the forest. My mum and dad [labelled pictures appear] and other villagers have jobs again. [New speech bubble] They chop down trees for wood to sell. But they also grow seelings in a nursery [picture] to plant in the forest. [New speech bubble] That way the forest carries on growing! Seedlings are baby trees. [A seedling appears] Page 5: ------ Animated Sok Chaun [Text in speech bubble] I am walking home from the nursey to the village. I want to plant 10 seedlings in the forest on my way home. [10 seedlings appear] Can you help me to find my way home? Page 6: ------ This is a an educational game. We have two alternatives – a maze or a “whack the mole” type game, and we’d like to develop whichever you think is the easier/cheaper option to build. Maze game: Forest maze; nursery at entrance, village at centre. Route leads past 10 bare areas to be planted. Route has dead ends and is complex enough to offer a challenge. 10 seedlings at top/side/foot of screen disappear as they are "planted". Small Sok Chaun character is led through maze by players. At bare patches he has to stop, a seedling appears in his hand, and a text box appears (see text below): [Text box text]: Bare patch a: "Planting here will make forest ponds refill with water. Fish from the pond will feed my village." [Text disappears, new text] "Now click on the seedling/earth to plant here" [Clicking makes seedling travel to bare patch and grow into a tree to fill it] Bare patch b: "Planting here gives shade so that herbs can grow. We will use them to make medicines." "Now click on the seedling/earth to plant here" Bare patch c: "These trees will provide new homes for birds and animals." "Now click on the seedling/earth to plant here" Bare patch d: "We will get lots of excercise and fun playing among the trees." "Now click on the seedling/earth to plant here" Bare patch e: "Mushrooms will grow in the shade of this tree and we will be able to eat them." "Now click on the seedling/earth to plant here" Bare patch f: "Trees planted here will hold the soil together so that it is not washed away by rain." "Now click on the seedling/earth to plant here" Bare patch g: "We will plant a seedling here for every tree that is cut down to give wood for building and to sell for food. This way the forest will carry on growing." "Now click on the seedling/earth to plant here" Bare patch h: "We will use branches from these trees to make our houses." "Now click on the seedling/earth to plant here" Bare patch i: "We will eat fruit from some of the trees in the forest." "Now click on the seedling/earth to plant here" Bare patch j: "Trees make oxygen. Oxygen is good for the air, so it helps everyone!" "Now click on the seedling/earth to plant here" OR ”Whack the mole” game: + The centre of the playing area is a clearing in the forest (between the nursery and home). + Periodically, good fertile planting areas appear in the clearing, represented graphically some way, but they only appear briefly. (So you need to plant in them quickly.) An small animated Sok Chaun plants a seedling in the space when the player clicks on it. + When you successfully plant a tree, a multiple choice question (based on the 10 “bare patch facts” in the maze game above) pops up to give you the chance to win another seedling and keep playing. The tree stays in the space where it was planted, so the number of possible places for fertile areas to appear is reduced. + As there are fewer spaces, perhaps the fertile places appear move briefly, or move around more rapidly + Once ten trees have been planted, the clearing is full of new trees, the game is over and you can move on to the next page. Page 7: ------ [Large colourful animation] Sok Chaun in his village, seedlings are planted around the village, forest growns, flowers grow, birds and animals return, sun comes out, everyone cheers! [text] Home at last! Page 8: ------ [Sok Chaun character] Did you find out why caring for the forest is important to my village? How many reasons can you remember? Click on the trees to see whether you remembered all of them! [Trees as bullet points down left side of page - as player clicks on each a sentence appears: + Forest ponds give us fish + We find work caring for the forest + We use wood for building + We sell trees for food + We eat fruit from the trees + Mushrooms grow under the trees + Herbs grow in the forest + Animals and birds live in the trees + Trees give oxygen + Village children play in the forest + Tree roots stop the soil from washing away ] [Sok Chaun character] Well done! [Button] Play again / End
