a) Review the causes of the financial crisis of 2007-2010 and decide whether it is linked to a failure of government regulation or to other social, cultural and institutional factors (50 marks)

b) Drawing on your answer to part a), discuss whether the collapse of Lehman Brothers’ business model in October 2008 could have been avoided (50 marks)

Question a) must recognise and draw on a range of academic and journalistic explanations of the crisis.

Question b) must draw on accounting, stock market and product market data as well as academic and ‘popular’ accounts.
