A 2600 sq. ft. Hip roof has a crack in the framework inside the attic . We currently have storm damaged shingles and want to shop for a new metal roof and want to know if our roof framing needs repair because we had a report of a cracked framing member when we bought. The house was built in 1965 and has one small coat closet entrance with 18 in insulation without crawlway. The crack is at the end of the building that the access is. We want a good strucual advise before steel roof. The building is a duplex that is owner occupied and is one story on three quarters with basement. There are a few low spots on the roof that the purchase inspection called poorly crowned rafters. Tell me what needs doing.

Hi, I have worked on residential roof-framing assessment projects where cracked rafters, sagging roof areas, storm damage, and attic framing issues needed to be reviewed before roof replacement. In one similar project, I inspected a hip roof with damaged rafters and poor attic bracing, documented the repair needs, and prepared recommendations before the homeowner installed a new metal roof. I'd love to share my experiences with you. Best regards, Epa

✅ Ready to jump in and get this done the right way—clean, fast, and reliable. ✅ I understand that a hip roof repair plan requires more than a simple sketch. The repair documentation needs to clearly identify the damaged areas, address any structural concerns, provide accurate framing details, and create a practical solution that contractors can follow with confidence. I have experience producing construction drawings, roof framing plans, CAD documentation, and structural repair layouts for residential projects. You can expect professional communication, attention to detail, and deliverables that are easy for contractors, inspectors, and engineers to review. I can provide scaled drawings, framing details, repair notes, and editable CAD files if required. I'd be happy to review your photos, measurements, and existing roof information and discuss the most practical repair strategy and timeline for completion.

Hi there, I’ve completed very similar roof framing assessment and repair plan projects, including storm-damaged roofs, cracked attic framing members, low rafter/crown issues, and pre-metal-roof structural checks. I have some thoughts on how to review the 1965 duplex framing, limited attic access, insulation constraints, and what should be documented before you invest in a steel roof. Best regards, Robert

Hello I’m very interested in assisting with the structural evaluation of your 2,600 sq. ft. hip roof duplex in Madison, WI, particularly in preparation for your planned transition to a metal roofing system. As a structural engineer with experience in residential roof framing assessments and retrofit design, I understand the importance of identifying and resolving underlying structural issues before installing a heavier and more rigid roofing material such as steel. Based on your description, key concerns such as the cracked framing member, poorly crowned rafters, limited attic access, and existing low spots will require a thorough and methodical evaluation. My goal is to ensure your roof structure is safe, stable, and fully prepared for a durable metal roof installation, preventing future issues and protecting your investment. I am available to begin promptly and would be happy to discuss the details further or review any inspection reports you currently have. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to working with you. Sincerely, Joseph

⚡⚡⚡Residential Structural Assessment & Roof Framing Engineer⚡⚡⚡ Hello, I have experience evaluating existing residential roof structures, including storm-damaged roofs, aging wood framing, rafter distress, and retrofit assessments before metal roof installation. My work includes attic inspections, structural recommendations, repair detailing, and determining whether existing framing can safely support proposed roofing upgrades. My approach is to review inspection reports and roof geometry, assess the cracked framing member and low-slope areas, evaluate load paths for the proposed steel roofing system, and provide practical repair recommendations with construction-ready details where needed. Key technical points to confirm are the project location/code jurisdiction, availability of attic photos or inspection reports, and whether a stamped repair plan or structural letter will be required for roofing approval. Thanks
