We have a server PC. We wish to generate output in the form of 4-20mA from the inputs provided by our PC. Input would be provided (preferably to a software) in the PC which communicates with the device and produces the desired output. For e.g. if we input 5 as input, the current output of 5mA should be provided by the device.

I propose that a small PCB would be designed and provided that would contain a micro controller, USB input and a current controlled output - this would be connected to your small server Yellow - I’ve not done this before but if you send over the tutorial I’ll happily take a look - lots of experience debugging windbg / soft ice etc I am a time served C++ programmer (20 years in industry) and have excellent previous experience in developing on both Windows and Linux as well as embedded programming. Essentially you only need a cheap 5V arduino for few bucks and a resistor (depends a bit on how mach voltage will drop down on the current sinking side (the one that uses the created 4 to 20 ma), so if about 0 to 4 v are enough a single resistor and a perhaps a capacitor for better precision should be good enough) just connect the R between Vcc and any analog pin and the C from the Pin to the ground. R = 4V/20ma = 200 Ohm.A rather trivial arduino program, measuring the dropdown voltage on the resistor and readjusting the Voltage on the analog pin is needed and thats it ... Of course it depends on the precision and temperature stability you need, so you might need a few more components, but that solution should be enough in most cases. And talking to arduino from your program is as easy as writing to virtual serial port. Hope that helps Peter
