We have a 2013 Dell Poweredge R720 running VMWare ESXi 5.1.0. and Windows Server 2008R2
It has eight 600GB Dell 15K SAS drives in a RAID 10 configuration but we have performance and space issues so I want to install eight 1TB SAS Solid State Drives.
The Dell SSD upgrades costs $2,400 each and we don’t want to spend 8 x $2.4K on the upgrade.
I bought a Samsung SAS SSD for $500 on eBay and did a hot swap with the existing Dell drive but the server wouldn’t recognise the new Samsung Drive so I swapped the old drive back and the RAID drive rebuilt the existing Dell drive.
Can such a conversion be done? Dell warranty their servers for non OEM parts now so it should be possible. Do we need drivers for the Samsung SSDs?
Have you done such a conversion before? Can you tell me with who so I can verify that you have the ability to do this work.
I also want you to teach me how it’s done so I can purchase seven more SSDs and install them myself, therefore your English must be good enough for me to understand you.
I anticipate you will log onto our server via my computer using AnyDesk or Teamviewer if you have a licence. We can talk via Whatsapp or whatever app you like.
We will also have to do this work out of business hours which are Monday to Friday 8am to 7pm Australian Eastern Standard Time. I am happy to work weekends if required.
I have installed OpenManage but have not configured it yet. Assistance with the configuration of OpenManage would also be appreciated.
I Googled it and one article says to upgrade the bios before starting. If that is required I would like some help with that as well.
I will want an approximate time estimate before we start.
If this project is successful I envisage forming a partnership for future work in this area.
