Hi, I have extensive experince in retoplogizing and manipulating various geometry types I.e Surfaced and solid models back into meshes and polygonal models primarily for animations and renderings and creating solid and surfaced models for machining and mold making purposes. However, if you already have .step files which are surfaced/Solids, why does it need to be only 3Dsmax for creating polygonal models with textures. They can be retopo in software other than max, like in maya for instance, and exported out as .fbx or .obj with textures on them and they can easily be imported in max or any other package for that matter and further worked with.
