the word doing the heavy lifting in your brief is "completely separate", and on Firebase that is decided in one place: the Firestore security rules. the mistake i see constantly on multi-tenant Firebase builds is a companyId field on every document, with the app filtering by it. that looks correct in the interface and is not isolation at all. the client holds the credentials, so anyone who opens the network tab can query another company's collection directly. the rules have to enforce that a signed-in user can only read documents belonging to companies they are actually a member of, and that gets written and tested before any screen exists. for accounting data specifically, two more things follow from that. writes need to go through validated paths so a client cannot post an arbitrary ledger entry, and anything that must not be editable after the fact should be written server-side rather than trusted from the browser. and since you want unlimited companies: the membership model has to be a real join between users and companies from day one. bolting multi-company onto a single-company schema later means migrating live financial records, which is the one migration nobody enjoys. first milestone i would suggest: authentication, the company membership model, and the security rules, with a test that proves one company cannot read another's data. everything else sits on that, and it is worth proving before we build screens.
