VIDEO MAIL “CLIENT”
GENERAL ASPECTS OF THIS PROJECT
The objective of this “pseudo mail interface” is to include some
“gamification aspect” in traditionally standardized text-based mail delivery
- Instead of containing the message in an email, the recipient receives
a notification that a “video message” is waiting for him/her
- This message is delivered through a visibly “system generated” email
notification (similar to the ones that electronic greeting card
companies use to notify a recipient that a “greeting card” is waiting
- When clicking on the notification, the user gets lead to a video
embedded in a interface similar to webmail interfaces. A clickable
video takes center stage, with a “Play” button right on top of it
- When clicking on the play button, the video starts with addressing the recipient his his/her name
“SURPRISE FEATURES”, PROOF OF CONCEPT, IMPLEMENTATION
The idea is that the video message has an interactive element ... i.e. asks
a question and offers buttons superimposed in the video as answers. The
video shall then react dependent on what answer is given.
This requires the video file to (a) loop within a “holding pattern”, and
based on different answers branch off to a certain time code without any
visible jump cut. This should be handled through delivery of a video
prepared for that.
Goal is to test the concept first with a simple video message inquiring
whether a Learner prefers to learn with Chinesepod using traditional or
simplified characters (or start without learning any characters at all).
Also the video will start with “Hello Michael” (one of the top 4 first names
across the ChinesePod user base).
The following TIMELINE is agreed (all time values in MM:SS:FF with
MM=Minutes, SS=Seconds, FF=Frame):
The video starts off at 00:00:00 with a host greeting “Michael”, and then
posing the question, until T-WLS (Time Wait Loop Start), upon reaching T-WLS
3 buttons will be superimposed in the left part of the screen (“Simplified”,
“Traditional” and “I do not want to learn characters”) and the video keeps
looping from T-WLS to T-WLE. If any button is pressed, the buttons disappear
(by fading out) while the player finishes the loop [T-WLS:T-WLE].
If button-1 is pressed, the video jumps to T-V1S and plays until T-V1E (and
fades to black over the last 10 frames), and same for button-2 and button-3
for [T-V2S:T-V2E] and [T-V3S:T-V3E] accordingly.
IN NO CASE should the video play beyond the limits (if timeline reaches TV1E/V2E/V3E, it MUST STOP and cannot keep playing)
What is important that the video CANNOT BE REPLAYED. Once the user clicks
any RESPONSE BUTTON, the video shall be marked as played.
Once the video fades to black, a “Reply” button should appear, and if
clicked it should transition the screen to a web form that allows the
recipient to enter a test message just like responding to a web-based email.
To maintain the notion of a functional email interface, the “Inbox” should
be clickable, and a thumbnail of the video should be listed, however if the
user clicks it, it should provide a pseudo error “Video Message was played
I will provide more details in chatting.
